GAFFNEY HAD NO CHANCE AT ANY TIME WITH DURABLE DANE End Comes In Fi(th Gaffney Talks , Foul But Fans Give Nelson Full Credit Crowd Large and Order jy Chic Bowlin Wins From Dick Jopes In, Fast Preliminary Nell of Denver Proves a Joke but Gets Away With Decision. "JIMMY" BRlYT 1$ 6N HIS WAY BACK TO FAME AND flLOltY. VFrldaS '.wim Tommy Gaffney, the Unknown. - ' 4 Now' it Is Tommy Gaffney, the Os trich. The much touted son of Spokane who was nt one- leap to gain n na tlnn wldo reputation by putting Bat lllrig N'elson to sleep failed to con nect Friday evening when the gong sunt them away In a ten round con tent and' badly battered, quit during the firth, claiming a foul. Saturday no was on u oca me ustrich on. ac count of his comical attempts at covering. But the milliner's favor ite bird, which has a habit, when pursued, of thrusting its head Into a .hole oln the ground and allowing the rest Of Its anatomy to remain ex posed; should rot be" compared with Gaffney for the fleet-footed bird has speed and n 'klck" as a part of Its defense. Gaffney has nil. Nelson hooka Good On the other hand. Nelson used the bout as a stepping stone oil his Journey back to tho championship, which he has set about attaintrig In as great a degree of determination as ho started on his first trip. Local fans arc nnarilraotis in the opinion that he will be able to render a good a'ceount of himself for two or thro j'ears jet, and should Macfarlanc or Welsh beat Woigast It looks as if Bad has1 a chance to ''come back" par don. Bat, wo know you don't like that phrase but the Durable Dane will have to get into better condition for a big event than he was last night, but at that hexwas far and away too' g6od for Mr. Thomas Gaff ney of Spokane. As -to his chance 'wllti "VVolgasl, there- are those who believe ho can beat the Michigan lad it all depends on tho old time stamina, and Friday night's little argument was not of long enough duration to glvo a line on his stay ing qualities, which nt one time won htm the title and ied sporting wri ters Id dub him "The Durablo Dane." However, Bat has made a host of new friends in Southern Oregon who will watch his future ring career with interest and who wish him well on (ho long, hard road ahead of him which he hopes to travel to regain his lost laurels. Gaffney and Fouls Thero bo those about tho city whq convorso of fouls, of dirty work, of crookedness. They say that Bat fouled Gaffney four times. Ho is ac cused of butting, of htting low and after tho gong tapped. It is true that Bai did land a couplo of blows after the gong, was sounded, whereupon Mr. Gaffney flopped himself to the canvas with great alacrity while his seconds the chief of them being an other Gaffney, of whom thero will bo more written anon shouted "Foul! Foul!" for all tho world to hear. In this particular instance all tho world happened to be In the hands of Refereo Hanaucr, and he couldn't see It that way. As to the blows that went low, they can be classed with the old lady who went east sho didn't go. The final blow struck by Mr. Durable Dauo caught tho Unknown on tho point of tho ribs and his cry of "I can't stand for that" should read, "I can't stand that." 'Twould have been nearer the .facts In the caso. Tho blow was disputed, but all of tho fans sitting clone to the corner in which tho blow was delivered wcro unanimous In baying that It lauded fair. There was no proocatlou for a foul blow, for" tho 'Dane was winning and had the battle' well 'in hand. Guffucy lilt Hefereo VMdsi df tho tails aro prone to for give'1 Gaffrfcy fdr an attack at the close on tho referee. Not that Han auer was at fault in any particular, hut the Spokano lad had received a hud beating, his fight was hopolcba und he realized It. In addition to this ho was dazed and mora or lebs hysterical. All of theso fads led to his sudden assault on Hiibsoll. There Is llttlo doubt but that ho had had control of his senses ho would not have nctod in tho manner in which ho did. But for the actions of Gaff uoy's In other they wore disgrace ful In tho extreme. Enteilng tho ling, ho first nttotnptcd to put tho Battler down, but ho hadn't a chnuce Tho Dane shook him off and went after Tommy, showing good Judg ment when ho simply shoved him back into tho corner und not sti Ik ing him. Tho Instant that Gaffuoy's (brother entered the ring rtefereo Hanaucr awarded the tight to Nel son. All bt whtcn was as it should "be, tor Gaffney could not have gone another round.' ' AlMii Is Ftuy Nelsdn Is the" same old fdiy ring general. Ho appeared Irit and inado; himself at home. He chatted with spectators and with' Ills' seconds. He at least was nbt in d6ubt as td tho outcoihe. Stripped he sliowdd him self to be In rather good condition, deceiving to tho eje, for In the mill he did not hao the finish on his work that is usually thdre.' As sdori as Gaffney appeared ' Bat trbtte'd across the' ring and shook hands. To extend a courtesy, you say? Well, perhaps, but more llkory 6 set whe ther Mr. Thoniak Gaffney1 was agi tated or not. Then came countless llttlo delays, the poe lor trie pic tures', the talks by Bat with the offi cials, even the crossing, of tho ring by Nelson to considerately tender Gaffney a portion of the resin for tho shoes all of these little things wore sprung by the veteran. Kind ness and courtesy? Sure they have had those same kind and courteous acts In the prize ring for the past SO j ears and crafty old Durable Is a past jnaster at it. Needless to say, Gaffney, the youngster, grew nerv ous. So wouid you at twenty, and In jour first big tight. At last the wait for the main event was over. The ring cleared. An nouncer Owney Patton mado his fi nal address and It was some ad dress, too, by the way. Referee Han aucr waved tho seconds from the ring. The gong clanged. Gaffney Too Euger Both men Jumped for the center of tho ring. No time was lost. Gaff ney wis a trlfie too eager but sent in a left to the face. Bat began hia" old ta'cUcs of never backing up and seemed willing to take the punches. The round wai about half over when Gaffney whipped1 over a right hook to the cheek which Jolted tho Dane considerably. Ho seemed dazed for an Instant and surprised. 'Twas a good llek and give tho Unknown credit Tor It. tor It was the only Jolt tho Battler got. The Dane shook his shaggy locks and went on Id. Early In the garrio Gaffney dis played a new style of ring tactics. He would crouch almost double and co ver his face with his to wgloves. Then ho allowed the bane to land at will until suddenly he would shoot out a left or right, ana although he seemed to land occasionally a close observer could see the Dane glvo his head a twist, taking -tho Jolt out of the kick. Either this, or tho blow was stopped by a glovo. Ever cau tious. Nelson did not give Gaffney the opening bo scented to be looking and waiting for and in the meantime rained in blow after blow on the glovo covered face of the crouch ing boy, occasionally whipping one over to the kidneys,! causing Gaff ney to straighten up with a Jerk. No Cliuucc for Tomiily During tho second rdUnd It was plainly only a caso of how long tho fight would go. Once Gaffney slipped and while down took the nine sec onds allowed. Never did ho have a chance. At tho end of tho second round Nelsdn did not hear tho bell und landed a'lght blow to the face, tiult noy tried to get away with It on the grounds of a foul but Hanuuor or dered thti meii to go on. Nelson, Id stead of resting, took ocedslou to talk to tho timekeepers and tell thein to sound tho gong louder. This was ImpoABible as a small gong had been provided and would not sound loud. At tho end of the third rttund Nelson caught himself Just hi time, the blow Just reaching Gaffney. Looked LIko Trouble Early in tid fifth It was soon llidt Gatfnby could not last jnue'h long er. His punches had weakened until the Buttler was almost disregarding them altogether. Suddenly hd whip ped oho to the ribs arid Gaffney went to his kneerf In a corner crying out as he fell, Hanaucr nibbed between the riie'u and then It was that Gaffney arose htld started for Hanaucr. Thero was no trouble, though It looked for au instant like It. After tho tight Nelson addressed tho house and showed considerable wind. Ho had hardly a mark on Mm. Gaffney attempted to speak, but when he claimed that ho had never gotten a square deal In Medford aud that Hanaucr had robbed him he was hooted down. Ho was hysterical at tho time and should not bo held too strictly to account for his re marks. The most serious criticism offer In regard to Tommy Gaffney is the fact that he did what no man would do in a ring or elsewhere in tho matter of language. Several times ho applied different epithets to the Dane and afterward to the referee. His brother, however, was far tho worst offender in this respect. The Preliminaries "Wc like fhe'maln event, but, oh, you first preliminary!" Chic Bowltn cop'ped the grapes from Dick Jones, winning all the way and thus get ting ba'ck for his defeat on the night of July 4. Chic In the meantime hJd Irarned to use his right hand, and with Jolts to the stomach brought his lighter hued opponent to his knees 'six times. Chic fought a heady fight and deserved the decision. Tho crowd greatly enjoyed the bout. But of all the men who ever step ped through a rope Into a prlzo ring add .touted himself as a fighter Kid. Nell of Deliver Is the worst yet. Roy .Smith of Los Angeles got his goaf rfnd skinned It and nailed It on the fence theh ho lost tho fight. And thereby hangs a tale. As a fighter Nell Is a dub, He Is worse than that, but tho United iStates postoffice department places a limit upon the descriptive powers ;of n poor newspaper man, so It will have to bo passed up. And speaking of a pass up, Nell should bo passed up, tabooed, and told to beat It by every fan w'ho likes tho gamo. A nice, big, juicy lemon would be -but what's tho Uho. He got Into the rWg to 'gel with Smith.' Smith hit him at will, when he could catch him. Flnallj Smith unfortdimtoly struck him low. After a fan had yelled Nell suddenly decided to fall down. 3o he carefully let himself out nt full length. Tho rpferee sturted tho 'crj thing went of'f nicely and rll v t4 Then Nell got to hia feot and cltl'iiod a foul. Tho refereo gavo hlni .tho decision, but why 'ho did after ho had started to count him out pluses all understanding. Ah for tho foul, no man who was over hit In tho grln hard enough to l;o knocked down over got up In four seconds. But Nell got away with It. 'Twas a h, for get It. Crowd Inrgo Tho crowd which attended the iKlits was largo and In n high good ullin6r. Walter McCalluni handled the affair In splendid 'condition, ev erything wo tnoff nicely and all wcro satisfied. Itoferoo Hanaucr desoives u word of copim'ondatjou for tho manner in which' ho ncdtiltted hlnlsolf. Ho was on tho Job all tho time and did ro- murkably well for 0110 as now as ho Is jrtucts tho Natntorlum gymnasium. In two weeks he worked wonders In getting tho B.Utler Into condition, which speaks well for tho gytri nnd l-Mwards methods. Bat put himself Into Franklo's hands entirely and told him to turn hltu out In good ihnpe. Fratlklo did.
