KJ It I A URGES SUNDAY CLOSING LAW Dr. Tufts of Portland Addresses Lo cal ConBrcoatlons In Regard to Work of Lord's Day Alliance Started Postofficc Closing. Hr. G. h. Tufts of Portland nd drcSHed a Inrpj audience at tho M K. oliuroli Sunday iiijiht. Ho nls( upokc at. the Hnptit church i tin morning. Dr. Tufts is secretary o thu Iionl's day alliance for Orvgoi anil California. Tho nllianoe is national orjiunirnlion, with its head quarters in New York city. It start ed the movement for the Sunday closing or jiostofficcs which ha Mvcpt the country from ocean U ovenu. It is working for Sundn closing of all unnecessary business and common labor. The speaker sah in part : The most fundamental rcforn needed a Oregon is a Suiulny res' law. The present law ot the stati has been declared to bo unconstilu tionnl by the circuit court at Port land, nnd it is n poor law at th best. Two legislatures have rcfuse to enact nn efficient statute' so tin friends of the cause arc advocatiin an initiative vote nt the next genera election. Man is so constituted that he re quires one full day of rest in. seven It is a sanitary measure, a hygienu law to which every American citize is entitled as n natural right, a much as ho is entitled to his nights of rest. Men nnd animals can d more nnd better work laboring onl six dnys out of the seven, is the die tium of science. The grocery ston on Main street which 1 saw open to day should be placed rindfcr ban, o. law to protect the rights anA inter ests of thoso which were closed. Tin druggists of the stnte are asking t have their hours for Sunday openinj confined to about three, frUih 10 tt 1 o'clock. And if the grocer am mcrchnut close their places of busi ness, there is no good reason wh; the proprietor of the theatre am moving picture show, which are nu for commercial gain, should not fol low the same rule. In the light the history of all southern Europ? these places of Sunday amusement aro demoralizing the public consciene nnd undermining the safeguards o' our republic. Said De Tocqueville Franco must have the Americai Sabbath or, she is ruined.' Under tlu leadership of her statesmen, Frunci has re-enacted her Sunday closin1 law which she repealed a quarter id century ago. Then there arc 4,000,000 of seve: day toilers in this free land of ours Many of them aro compelled to laboi on Sundays to hold their jobs foi Monday. Slnves to toil they are, un der tho lnsh of their employers, am longing for some Lincoln to striki their shackles from them and set them free. To do this is the work espoused by tho Lord's day alliance. And in the name of good business andgood morals1 to restore in tin public mind tho sacred character ol this holy day of our forefathers, and thus prevent its being merged into the continental holiday Sunday. OPENING DAY AT LAKE THROUGHLY ENJOYED 10 ELECTRIFY MANY FARMS Griffin Crcckcrs to Join Hands With County In Construction of Power Line Over 40 Places Will Receive Electric Power. In an enthusiastic gathering at the district school house recently the residents of Griffin creek voted unanimously that their farms should oo cicciniicu. iiie piau is lo co operate with the county in the con struction of n polo lino up Griffin creek. Tho county rock quarry re cently opened on the property of the Griffin Creek Orchard company re quires electric power to run n crusher and for lighting purposes. A committee- composed of Messrs. It Is figured that 40 families can be reached by the proposed polo line. About 'JO of these were repre sented nt the meeting nnd all were unanimous as to the importance of electrifying their farms. At the meeting, the telephone sit uation was also discussed and dra tic action taken. The two Griffin creek party lines known as Company No. 1 and Company No. 1 have been the eau-e of t.he rise of hud blood among the Griffin ereekers. Com pany No. 1 agreed, for n certain an nual payment, to keep No. li's line in good order, No. 12 to furnish material promptly. Members of both com panies claim that they have not been treated fairly. As a solution of the difficulty the line was given over to a different central company to both furnish switchboard connections and keep the line in repair.
