Crossing tho English channel today vylth ten other aviators, Conncau, a French entrant, wone the first prize of $12,300 In the big European polnt-to-polnl race from London to Paris. Ho made the fastest elapsed time. First to reach Herndon, tho official end of the course, today was Pierre Vedrlne, who won $2000 as first In the stage from Calais to Loudon. Ved rlne would have been the winner of the big prize but that he was unable to compete In one stage of the race. this making his elapsed time the greatest. Barra. also crossed tho channel. Most pf the aviators continued to Herndon, six miles north of Loudon, thus covering the 93 mile trip from Calais. Henaux carried a passenger on his flight. Gilbert made tho swiftest trip, doing tho distance in 37 minutes and five seconds. Vedrino arrived at Herndon first, winning tho $14,50,0 prize be hav ing been winner of four of the seven stages of the race. Great crowds greeted the winner at Herndon and the other aviators, who arrived later, were also roundly cheered. Train, whose machine killed Mini ster of War Berteaux at the start of the Paris-Madrid, race, was forced to descend between Dover and Shore- bam; Gilbert alighted near Dorking, and Renaux and Barra near East bourne. WltU a total precipitation ot -1.59 Inches, Phoenix Is recovering today from tho most severe rainstorm since 1891. Investigation today showed that the cantaloupe, alfalfa and other props are practically ruined. The rain began Saturday and fell continuously until Sunday morning. No less than a dozen adoho houses were washed away and for four after the storm had subsided, nearly every building In tho city was sub merged in from one to threo feet of water. Tho property loss will ruu into the thousands. So far as iu known, no lives were lost, although a number ot outlying districts, cut off from wire communi cation, arc yet to be heard from.
