Muss., has agreed to pay half the cost of tree plant ing along streets. Evidently property owners of Everptt arc similar to many ol tJiose ol lUeatoru, wimioue prmc in uio appear ance and uniformity of the streets, without thought of the shade and comfort resulting, and unable to realize tho ap preciation of property resulting therefrom. Many of Medford 'tf streets are bare and forbidding in appearance, where shade trees would make them attrac tive and inviting. They are far less comfortable in sum mer and the clement of beauty is lacking. Before Medford can become the city beautiful, tree planting will have to be made compulsory. There arc too many citizens following the line of least resistance to trust the subject with them. Southern California cities seem to have solved the problem. The municipalities do the ilanting and caring for the trees, borrowing the system in vogue in Paris, Vi enna and other famous European capitals and copied in Washington. It is impossible to secure the best results along any other line. The Mail Tribune has for years advocated a charter amendment giving control of planting and caring for street trees to either a tree warden or a park commission. Such an amendment should be submitted to the voters at the next special election for without it Medford will never become the city beautilul. A LOGICAL ARGUMENT. PERHAPS as absurd an argument against direct legis lation as ever put forth is that printed by the Cin cinnati Enquirer, which in a far-fetched simile attributes the crmmixion ot Jesus to Tilate's so-called use ot the ref erendum in referring the sentence to the mob. The En quirer says: "Flanked by the panoply and gorgeousness with which Rome surrounded her colonial governors, and imbued with a sense of justice and' a knowledge of the law, the mighty Pilate could find no fault with the humble Teacher who stood before him; but with the same cringing subservi ence and fear that would control and dominate judges to day if they were subject to the recall, he put the matter up to the surging mob that surrounded the helpless and inoffensive prisoner. The referendum accomplished its ghastly purpose with a celerity and avidity that astonish ed even the martial and warlike representative of the Cae sars. The initiative, referendum and recall are sadly mixed in the Enquirer's plutocratic mind. Referring a decision to a courthouse mob is not a referendum to all the people. Neither was the "surging mob" shouting for the blood of Jesus, benefactor of the people, composed of the peo ple. It consisted of the scribes, pharisees and money lend ers that Jesus had flogged in the temple, whose business Jesus' doctrine interfered with in other words, of plu tocrats and politicians, the same class that today defend a Lorimer and a Ruof. The people always flocked to hear Jesus, but the people were denied a voice by the scribes and pharisee in govern ment then, as they are today by the alliance of big busi ness and politicians. Yet the Enquirer's argument is logical and as erudie as most of the arguments put forth against direct legislation. All. It. M. PO.
