Manager Malbocuf of Mcdford Com
mcrcial Club Regrets Fact That En
tire Attention of Local Producers
is Turned to Apples and Pears.
"It scorns In the nil absorbing topic
of apples and poiira," wild C. A.
Malbouci, manager of tbo Commer
cial Club, "that tlio fact, that the
Roguo Illvor Valley Is a producer of
tho first rank of farm products has
been allowed to become absolute.
"In fact tho Impression has Rone
abroad thu this valley can not
raise anything else but fruit and to
day Is being used as capital against
tho valley.
"It Is an established fact yet not
well known to residents of this val
ley, that years ago the Hoguo Hlvcr
Valley and Its tributaries give bettor
wheat than tho famous Palousc
country. This Industry has been al
lowed to dlo, In tho orchard fever
and thcro aro thousands of acres of
good land In tbo Applegate, Illinois,
Sams and other tributary valloyH of
tbo Iloguo.
It has boon forgotten that -this
valley was onco tho greatest corn
producing section In Oregon, In fact
of tho coast. That thcro aro no cer
eals which do not grow with oxcel
lunco In this section.
"Again, taking tho garden part of
farm products. This Industry Ih
neglected. Wo spend $1,500,000 for
these Alono. Wo can and havo raised
(ho fjmost pumklns, squashes, rad
ishes, onions, and other vegetables In
tbo state. Wo should Biipply tho dis
trict of Portland Instead of being a
consumer.
"Poultry would. do well In thd val
ley and Seattle and Portland will
glvo contracts for all tho eggs and
poultry wo can ralso.
"Dalrlng, thero la no bettor graz
ing and dairying land In Oregon bol
ter than tho Illinois and Applegate
vnlloyH,
"Again tho Idea of no moro lands
to bo takon up la wrong from start
to finish. Mr. Baling Iuib told mo
that ho can locate families on 120,000
lacreB In this uocion. Abandoned
homesteads, forfeitures and etc.
"It Is tlmo wo look to and develop
ed our latest resourves which havo
been neglected."
