HOT INTEREST IT A ROAD Eureka Speculates Now as to the Time When Railroad Will Connect That Place With Crescent City- Much Activity is Expected. RUUIOICA, Cal March 22. Groat .Intorest lias been manifested In tills c.lly wltli rofcreiico to tlio nows that tho ClraiitH I'iihh and Hoguo Hlvor railroad Ih how building out of Grunts Pass west toward CroHcont City In Dol Norto county, 100 inlloa north of Eureka. , Much HHciilatlon has arisen as to whon a lino will ho constructed to connoct Hurcku with Crescent City, and tho consensus of opinion seems to ho that If tho Grants PasH-Crascont City road Is built within tho noxt yoar and a hnff, It will not ho long thereafter heforo tho coast lino will bo in operation. It Is figured that so much railroad activity started to tho north will bring about tho proposed roast lino much sooner than It might otherwise liavo been built. Thoro Is now ovory Indication that tho road will ho pushed on to Cres cent City as fast as men and monoy can build It. There Is a big tlmbei and mineral belt at tho western tor . minus of the proposed, lino and a big market In tho enst for tho products to be taken out. Also the 1 1111 Hues aro building east out of Medford, which Is just north of tho Grants Pass Junction with tho Southern Pa cific Hues. These Hill Hues with the connecting link of tho Southern Pa cific botweon Grants Pass and Med ford will afford practically a direct j onto oast from Crescent City for lumber and mineral wealth to bo falcon out of Del Norto. It Is probable that a little later 11111 will extend his Hues down from 'Medford to Grants Pass, which will make tho eastern route oven more direct. That thoro will ultlmuiuly bo a coast Hue from this city north to Portland Is takon for granted gener ally. The only thing that Is uncertain is tho date. Hut now tho prospects indicate that tho dato will not bo far distant, due principally to the fact that a tupping lino Is going Into Crescent City from Grants ass. CARNEGIE'S FAME EFFORTS. A NDREW CARNEGIE'S efforts to buy the good will of nostcritv and the respect of future generations by giving millions to libraries and to peace funds arc absurd. They indicate the uneasy conscience. Mr. Carnegie's money conies from exploiting his fel low men. It is the toll taken from the labor of the many through the manipulation of government for the benefit of the few. JJe makes a profit upon the labor of everyone in the steel district, as well as forcing the nation to pay him an unjustifiable profit on all the iron and steel con sumed. iIr. Carnegie has said that it is a disgrace for a man o die rich. Jt is then far more of a disgrace to accumulate useless riches during life at the expense of humanity. If Air. Carnegie desires so to benefit humanity, why docs he not begin with his army of employes, better their life, with its unnatural confinement, its repression, strain and tension, its heart-breaking monotony, its emptiness and disappointment? Dinky little libraries in Medford and other towns, maintained at public expense to keep green the name of Carnegie will but point a moral to adorn a tale. JMnnnu'enl gifts to peace societies do not atone for the bringing of "war and death into the homes of his own half-paid toilers. Posterity judges a man by what he has done for human ity. This alone lives, the balance is forgotten. As a cur rent writer says: "It seems probable that in the future estimate of his tory it will not be ilr. Carnegie s gitts cither oL libraries or of peace- funds or of scientific resources, however suc cessful these may be, which will be hailed as his great con tribution to the race; but rather his part in making steel fine and cheap, to be the tool of vvvvy craft of civilization, the framework of its shelter and the means of its commu nication. And if the manufacture of this great master metal, as shaped in his hands, shall in the process make life cheap without making it fine, he will be measured ac cordingly. For history reverses the lenses of social visien: American civilization will be judged by its slums, and not by its foreign missions; by its jails, and not by its horror at Siberian mines; by the peace and good will of its indus tries as well as its industry in allaying war." A CITY should be planned just as well as a home. Topographic features, parks, shade trees should be considered. Beauty is as important an element in the creation of the city as utility. While Mcdford is still in the transition stage of emerg ing from the country village to the small city, the idea of the city beautiful should ever be kept in mind. Some of the additions to Medford laid out by greedy real estate speculators not only neglect beauty, but also utility. They provide lots to sell only, without regard to the welfare or convenience of the residents or the future growth and necessities of the city. The plots for these additions should never have been accepted by the county. All should have been referred to the city engineer for rejection. The city should never vote to permit such additions, with narrow streets, few cross streets, to become a part of the city or secure the benefits of water, sewerage, pavement, oo. Ashland is setting all the cities of Oregon a worthy example in actually becoming the city beautiful. It has a park system worthy of the name. It is parking the center of its main boulevard. Its picturesque location is being made the most of for attractiveness. Mcdford, lacking these natural advantages, must make up by increased energy. If streets are not wide enougli for parks in the center, the curbs can be parked. More parks can be added. The railroad right of way should be parked. Bear creek banks should he parked. "We can plant trees, keep the city clean, and make a naturally flat and uninteresting place a garden of bloom and foliage. There is but one way to accomplish such a result and that is by everyone's doing his or her share and do ing it now. It will soon be too late to plant trees now is the time. Don't let the opportunity slip. Do our share. Not ait i:peiliiioiit. Pttlnt Lick. ' COAL OUT MINERS Clash Between Foreigners and Amer icans Expected Any Moment Three Shafts of Northwestern Coal Company Affected. HO MEMBER OF GAME BOARD Southern Oregon the Goat, Thanks to Eastern Oregon's Hoggishness in Wanting Two Members When Only Entitled to One. That houtliern Oregon will not se cure membership on the new fish and game commission is one of the bits of unwelcome information im parted by Governor West during his recent visit. "The amendment passud making two of the members from eastern Or egon, has cut out southern Oregon, I tun afraid," stated Governor West "It was my original intention to name one of the four members I urn to se lect from southern Oregon, but I do not see how 1 am to do it now. "The Columbia river salmon in terests are entitled to one member. The coast salmon interests to an other. The game interests of west ern and northern Oregon centering at Portland, are entitled to a third. This would leave the other two meni hers to be seleelcd from southern and eastern Oregon, lint if eastern Or egon gets two game representatives. it cuts out southern Oregon." The governor names four members. One of them will be W. L. Finley. pie-ideal of (lie Audobon society. Another will represent (lie salmon interests. The other two must bn from eastern Oiegon, with no .sal mon interests and less fish and game than any other section. These four will select n fifth, who will probably also rcpiesent the salmon industry. So southern Oregon is tlio goat thanks to Jay Howerniun and his eastern Oregon bunch. However, with tlio master fish war den from southern Oregon, and the governor himself helping out the Rogue river, southern Oregon ought to be well looked after. Probably tho commission will con sist of members from Astoria, Klam ath Falls, Portland, Pendleton and one that the members themselves will select. xoricn. The first game of baseball of this season will be played on the Mcd ford baseball grounds Sunday. The Medford team will ctoss bats with the Jacksonville team and n hard contest is expected. Medford will loan Jacksonville Cutcher "Curly" Wilson, and for a pitcher, that team has secured the services of Wilcox, u former star ot St. Marys. With this battery, which is one oi the best in southern Oiegon and a well balanced team to support them, Jacksonville looks formidable. For Medford, Murray and Hurgess will do the twirling. IJurgess is one of the best "southpaws" of his age in Oregon and hits always had it on tho Jacksonville "stickers." The team, for Medford is a hnid hitting team, every man being of the slug ger type and homo run calibre. The Medford team will appear in their new uniforms which are n nnttj gray with a golden pear and a rosj apple on the shirts as cmplcms.
