Nor will the future have much of a wilder ness. Populate the country and the cities usually take care of themselves. But the country never populates, itself. It is populated through the effort and energy of the city. It is the con sitent advertising, exploiting and development work done by the cities that brings the homeseekers and colonists to the country. Nowadays, however, the city has a fascination all its own J or the larmer. li the building oi the city is neglect ed, it is not so easy to colonize the surrounding country. Purifiers had rather live near an attractive city than in re mote and isolated sections. Hence the city cannot be ignored as its amenities go far toward increasing the pleasure of toil. The Rogue River Valley is ideally located to offer the happy mean between the wilderness and the mob. A com promise most beneficial to humanity. The entire region should become a garden spot with a family located upon every ten acres. Jt has for years enjoyed tho reputation in California that the "Rogue had in Oregon Of furnishing tho finest steel head angling in the state, and was a mecea for the money spending sportsmen of the coast. The glory of the Eel, however, is about to depart. That a few Portuguese and others loo lazy to work, may make a comfortable living, the Eel river is to be commercialized, and steel head seining is to be permitted. A law recently passed by the California legislature, sanctions the seining and sale of steel head below tide water from October 23 to February 1. As the Eel is a small stream, and the big run of steel head comes during this period, when the fish go up stream to spawn, the extermination of the steel heaxl in the Eel is but a ques tion of a few years. In addition to this regular steel head season, fishermen are allowed to keep and sell all steclhead taken in nets after September 17. Now that the. people of Oregon have closed the Kogue to commercial fishing and the governor of Oregon has kept it closed, and the legislature of California opened its streams to the commercial fishermen, the llogue will soon have a. natipual reputation as the only exclusively angling stream on the const and will attract hither thousands of anglers from all parts of the country, including those who formerly annually visited the Pel.
