v r FRUIT SALES 400 Northwestern Fruit Exchange Had Successful First Year, Marketing 400 Cars and Pavinfl Way for Co operation Among Exchanges. R. H. Parsons, president of the Northwestern Fruit Exchange, organ ized Inst summer, states that the or ganization hns had a successful first season and paved the- way for accom plishing a great deal for tho fruit growers through cooperation, by act ing as a clearing house. Tho total sales reached $100,000. The exchange was organized on cer tain well-defined principles. First, realizing that local fruitgrowers' asso ciations, wh'ch would assemble the fruit In carload lots, "thereby making It avallablo for any market In tho world, and which could undertako to train tho members to grow, pick, pack nnd prepare the fruit for tho market in tho most up-to-date and practical manner In other words, to stand ardize tho business were fundamen tal in the general scheme of organlza tlon. the exchango determined to support that principle, and its tunc Mou has been to act as a clearing house for these local associations and to undertako tho responsibility for marketing tho fr.ult, after It is loaded on the cars at'thd various shipping stations. Fruit "Widely Distributed. Tho following figures will servo to show the results of the first season's work of tho exchange: Number of cars sold 691 Number of markets employed ..124 United States 93 Canada 2 England 2-1 Ireland 2 Scotland 1 Wales 1 Germany A largo part of tho success of tho exchange has been due to Its finding tho smaller and unoccupied markets. Out of tho 691 cars marketed fewer than ton cars wcro actually sold in tho New York market, which was crowded throughout tho season with consigned fruit soiling at very low prices at public auction. Average Prices Shown. As showing tho excellent prices ob tained by tho oxchnngo, tho following tablo of averages Is given. These prices refer to SI cars shipped from ono district of tho Wenatcheo Valloy, and aro representative of tho prices obtained by other sections. They aro for threo to five tier apples and aro based on actual account sales f. o. b. shipping statien: Extra Fancy Fancy Cholco Spitzenhorgs $2.06 $1.8G $1.35 Winter Bananas . . 2.50 2.50 .90 Winesaps 1.67 1.56 1.01 Staymen Winesaps 1.19 1.46 1.03 Arkansas Blacks. . 1.60 1.50 .95 Home Beautys. ... 1.47 1.35 .96 Grimes Golden... 1.40 1.34 .91 Black Twig 1.33 1.33 1.01 Willow Twig 1.50 .... 1.00 Claims Aro Ilccorded. Tho ownership of tho stock of the oxchnngo is controlled by northwest ern fruitgrowers, an therefore Its pol icy and management. Tho oxchnngo Is conducted on a principle of tho widest publicity. Its stock Is avall ablo to Incorporated fruitgrowers as sociations, with tho usual privileges. Tho local associations controlling the supply aro tho masters of tho situa tion at all times, and tho exchange must stand absolutely on tho morlt of Its service. Thoro can bo, in the nat ure) of things, no posslblo control by tho exchange except as this control is freely accorded by its members for purposes of co-operation and on its merits.' A Strange Story.
