Centra la 207 Ilaskiii'-. fur healtli. trouble only became apparent after the apples had been packed. A careful examination of the spotted fruit shows that only the epidermal nnd sub-epidermal cells nro iniuied, nnd the injury may be said to be only skin deep. However, in tho chsc of,, the yellow fruit it often gives it the nppe'nrntiee ol scale infestation. Later the spots become blnek and very slightly sunken. The spot is in no way like the "llaldwiu sunt," which is nlwn.vs to be jlound affecting the .tissues beneath. the epidermis, and may go to a considerable depth in the flesh of tho fruit. The "Baldwin hpui' is purely physiological nnd is not caused by nny fungus or bacterial organism. For .some time pnst the writer has been uoiking on the storage spot, and now he belies cs very strongly that (lie whole trouble is due to in ferior lend ar.scnate which hud been used to control codling moth. A large number of qualitative chemical tests were mndo of tho nppnrently sound fruits, the red-spotted nnd he black-spoiled fruits, nnd in ev rv case nppremablo ipi.iulitios in .Usenic were found. After them acts were known, specimens of ap ples were scut lo the bureau o. hciuistry, United States ikvnrtniem it" agriculture, with n reipiest f.ii n re fill Munnlitutivo tests for nr enic The npplev upon leeeip! .vere carefully washed mid wiped oil o as to remove all arsenic lha, light have adhered to the outsid" f the apple, nnd thus leave only the rseiiic that had penetrate I the ti tnv.. Ten-gpm samples of the pnls of both Newtown nnd Spitr.cn urg apples and ten-gram sample f the apparently sound skins of ncIi variety were examined for nr enic. The samples taken included ot only the epidermal and 'suh piilernial tissues, but a considerable mount of the .flesh which did not ecessarily contain any' arsenic. The usult of the mmlysis is as follows Spitzenburg Appaiently sound kin. 0.02.r nig. arsenic; red spots, '.OoO mg. aisonic; black spots .030 mg. arsenic. Newtown Apparently sound skin .020 mg. arsenic; led spots, 0.02.' lg. arsenic; black spots, . From this It will be seen that nr enic has really gotten beneath tin pidcmiis mid also in ennsiderabh mounts. Undoubtedly the conccn ration about the injured spot i renter than analyses show. Tin niise of the trouble is that the lew trsenatc used contained loo large m mount of soluble arsenic (hut i say, the amounts of the soltibl ompnuuds of the arsenic wen renter than allowable for safe us ige. A large number of tests havi liown that some of (he brands con allied as high as 1 to l't solubl- irsenic, or at least compounds of ar enic There is another imijoilan mint which should not be oveilook d it fairly good grade of lead nr -ennlo may become injurious if (h ater used to nnplv it contains an reciable amounts of sulphates am 'iloiides. However. 1 would sip lint most of the trn"lil ...,.,,., in this section may bo directly Irac d to the arsenical Mm-Ii. Hie tn 'eel of putting on three or four np (lications during the sensou is such is to cause a cumulative effect gnin, too large fiuantities are often ed Hi i wp i pi- If Hip nrspniciil i-nn tniucd n minimum amount of soluble' arsenic, no trouble .should result. The use of more than four pounds of lead arsenate l 100 gallons of water is certainly not advisable. I To thos'e who may receive fruits which tire. spotted, 1 would say that the fault in no way rests with the grower or packer. This spotting has always occurred nfter the fruit was packed for shipment. Furthermore-, the spot is not such as to more than injure the epidermis, or, at least, a very few cells beneath the epider mis. This whole mat tor is verv im portant in that much damage may be done, not directly to the fruit itself bill to its appearance, and This vntu ally spoils its snle. 'Uiih office lins studied this tumble i'oi the past three or four years and feels that il we are tovbj withou, the trouble bet icr grado of ledd arsenate must bo purehnsed. The use of mi equal weight of lime with the lead nrseii ato is always advisable in the first sprays. Tho last spray, however, il lime were usimI with it, would tend to spot the fruit a good ileal, hence the lime must he omitted tlM - - :: &&mzM, : SmSBADjTIHEKlEfiElli OF AMERICA J. V.
