Medford people should assist this enterprise In every way and help to secure the right of way beyond the Falls on towards Klam ath and get through tho trunk lino east and west, which will make a shortening of tho distance about GOO miles. Mr. Gerlg is to be congrat ulated on his work and the people will find that there has been only the rery best work done on the road. "Will and Lew Warner have been eamping in the hills and they sue-, eeeded in getting all tho fish they needed, besides securing a fine buck Mrs. Warner, Mrs. Anspiger and hus band and Mis3 McKfnney, tho latter of Baker City, accompanied tho gen tlemen and were In camp with them. They all loft on Thursday on their way to Crater Lake. They report hav ing a most pleasant sojourn at Butte Falls. Manager Mills has been making a detour of tho burning sections and nas his men out, day and night, wag ing war against the element which has done so much damage to his company's holdings. It Is creditably reported that C. E. Wolvorton saw a man setting out fires In the Crater Lake company sec tion, but that as he had no gun and the man was too far away to be rec ognized, ho could do nothing but yell at tho man. Wnna Parker and family have re moved from Butte Falls to their ranch. Several important real estate trans actions have taken and will tako placo in Butto Falls before many moons wax and wane, and our town will be materially boneflted. It Is with tho incoming of moneyed and buBlnosa people of moral and finan cial credit .hat Butte Falls will grow and soon becomo an Ideal locality. Thero aro somo signs of rain and It is greatly hoped that wo will havo soaking downpour, for It is only by a drenching rain that wo may hope to seo tho fierce forest fires extln-' gulshed and tho atmosphere washed of Its present cmoko Impurities. John Allou of Derby wns hero on Sunday and continued on to his ranch In tho hills to look after his stock. Undo Ben Edmonson has been tak ing Manager Mills around through out the flro zone that Mr. Mills might leo what damages wero being done and what vas needed to impede tho further advance of tho flames. Mr, Mills has been Indefatigable In his efforts to protect tho company's largo landed nnd timber interests and has beon going day nnd night until be is about worn out with his labors. For the pact day or two Butto Falls has precontod tho appcaranco of a military encampment, On tho south nro oncamped Captain Robort Offloy with hie companies E and M of tho First regulars, ylth Liouton- ant Untie as second In commnud, and tho rec'jrrontnl physician In n tent closo by, whllo all i.round nro tho men who r.nvo not bcoi detailed. Tho first thl .c Captain Otfloy did upon his arrival was to tanUo strict inquiries as to tho civil authorities upoa tho ground, and Judge Fonts being closo to hand, a confidential I conference took nlaco and an undor- 1 ... . , ,, . , .. standing reached. Tho captain then detailed a cquad of plckod voluntoors who wero carried In all tho vehicles that could bo secured to U.e fires near Butte Falls. Ihcso men being. undor charge of a most off Iclont ser - gennt, and they wero out all night long fighting the florco flames which wero rapidly sprcadtng nnd eating up tho valuable timber of Butto Falls and Crater Lr.ke Lumbor companies. Captain Otfloy then havlnc received a personal account of tho fires, somo ' l"-"" ...W..H.. u. ... ..., !. " ".v v,. .. .j r pie and the doctor's family and at a lato hour they started out In a hurry nnd fought the flames nil night An bej d()ne that cou,d DQ dono at . . t. ,. ., . . .. I this time, tho captain sought needed rest with his men and In the early morning broke camp and started, after leaving a few soldiers to gunrd tho baggage that was left behind, for Cedar swamp and Four-Bit creek, where the fiercest of fires had been haging and wero still burning, hav ing destroyed the homo of Mr. Tref fren and thousands of acre3 of fine timber. In addition to these forces, Manager Mills of Butto Falls Lum ber company Impressed all the men and vehicle, obtainablo and with J. I. Patton as guide and all being armed with shovels, picks and other flro fighting Implements, started for the Fredenburg section and there these men and at other points fought the llwlmg nght untI1 they werG ex. hausted. In other directions forces were out atd not for a moment did the brave men desist In their exhaust ing labors aud it is thought that at some points tho flamea Isvo been brought under control, but as fast as one flro Is extlnculshed another broke out a mile or more distant and clear ly proving that somo mhcrcant whose hellish heart Is Intent upon destruc tion has started to burn out tho whole country. Strict orders havo teen giv en to shoot down any person caught setting fires and it Is hoped that ono or more of these fiendish scoundrels will bo caught and a speedy end made of him. It Is creditably report ed that several more companies of soldiers are on their way to this point and no effort will bo spared to check the ravages of tho most destructive fires which ha.o ever visited this sec tion, resulting In damage and loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars to tho government, timber corpora tions and to private owners. Too much cannot bo said In praise of Cap tain Offley, Lieutenant Hntle Rans or Hoist, Manager Mills and Super intendent Netherland and Cruiser Patton, with their bands and compa nies of noble men, for tho valiant services they have rendered, and also to tho people of Butte Falls who ren dered every assistance to tho firo fighters. Piatt, Johnson nnd Clark, who have been camping hereabouts, have gono out to tho valley. Professor Johnson of Crator Lake school district was visiting friends In tho Falls on Saturday. There are several theories as to tho origin of the forest fires, that they aro set out by persons who aro opposed to tho conservation and tho resorvo policy of tho government; that thoy aro started by vindictive feelings against tho rangers nnd aa a positive protest against tl.o policy which has deprived so many of home steads and made thorn loso all their time, labor nnd means In trying to fiocuro a homo; that Btockmon havo sot out tho fires that thoy may havo grass for their roaming stock; thnt It Eagle Point Eaglets MIsd Beatrice Spencer camo In from tho neighborhood of Dudley Thursday on her way to Jackson ville to tnko tho examination for a license to tench school. That tho fire was In many plnces leaving noth ing but tho charred stumps of the great forest; that there had beon up to date no homes burned In that section, although I learned through another source that Benjamin Fre denburg hnd lost ono of his largo barns and hay; that Is near Butto Falls and not on tho unsurveyed.
