Thus ikey kope to rival Shayne, who con trols the airship industry. VHI Mr. Waddy decides condi tionally to capitalize the Carson 'Craighead project. Tbe two men were tbe best of trar .U& companions. Mr. Waddy Insisted a going In tbe smoker. Mr. Craighead 'took the stateroom while his money lasted and then borrowed of Mr. Wad- ir. Craighead had advertised for jpeople to organize a rapid business campaign covering tho civilized world Is meet him in West Twenty-third atrect at tbe studio of an acquaintance to whom be bad neglected to impart .may knowledge of tbe tryst with tbe specialists. Waddy and Craighead ar rxlred somewhat lato on account of tbo time consumed la adjusting Mr. Craig head's aura and found a crush of peo jie entirely alien to tbe fine arts, filling the studio and the ball outside. Craig head's sculptor friend, with a lady aaodel, escaped the angry mob into the -scaffolding of an equestrian group rep- WKHT ABOUT WITH MAItVELOCB ltA- FIDITI. resenting an Indian maiden In a stam pede of buffaloes. Tbe model had been peeing for something an Indian maid en perhaps and bad feathers in her hair. Craighead broke through by impcr Maatlng an officer, shouting "Make way for the police!" nnd uppercuttlng the crowd with his elbows. "Hello, Do Land!" said bo, nodding to the sculptor. "Most beauteous jpciacesa of tho Apaches, how?" That you, Craig?" called down the sculptor. "What, not sober? Go after Hm police. Turn these people out, -pUase, Craig!" "Friends of mine," said Craighead, I advertised for 'cm. nope you haven't been Incommodod, old mnn." "Not at all!" reclled tbe sculptor sap f i A cnatlcally. "But get them out so Miss Drown aud 1 can dweud." Craighead's manner ot disposing of tho crowd commanded Mr. Wnddy's sincere respect, lie wont about with marvelous rapidity, sending away those whoso nouutlllty was unquestionable aud making engagements with others at "our Wall street ofllce," tbe name of which made everybody more re lpectful. The dinner to wblcb Mr. Craighead took Mr. Do Laud. Miss Drown and Mr. Waddy was the first of a series which reduced Mr. Waddy to torpor. The old gentleman. In bis long frock coat which buttoned to n surtout, his frowzy face and bis evident attach ment to Mr. Craighead, was remember ed in certain ultra bobemlau circles for his surreptitious slinking Into the dimmest corners of cafes and roof gar dens. Ete had n dark secret, Mr. Craig head said, which, be did not explain, originated in Mr. Waddy's agreement with the lady In goggles that the whole situation was Improper. Be felt obliged to keep with Craighead because of a suspicion that the aeronef was a figment of two Slattcry institute im aginations, and be did not purpose to let any guilty man escape. So he providently engaged n detectlvo to shadow both himself and Mr. Craig head, the unremitting presence of whom in very plain clothes made Mr. Waddy feel and look guilty and fugi tive. His second reason for becoming Mr. 'Craighead's double was his sense of duty of preventing that pupil of Dr. Wltherspoon from breaking the vow of abstinence. So he drank most of tbe intoxicants served to Craighead, somewhat to the Injury of his health, but much to the betterment of his rep utation as a roisterer. Altogether It was a relief to get Craighead back home, whero be installed blm as a lodger and boarder, charging blm well for his accommodation and lending him the money on his note to pay for It On arrival ho went to bed and turned Craighead over to Mrs. Gray bill, with strict injunctions to tele phone tbe sheriff's office if be was un accounted for for more than an hour. It was a situation with some unique aspects. Mr. Craighead began whlllng away time with a work on the "Mor phology of the Crawfish" and dips Into Do Qutncey's "Spanish Nun." Look ing from the library window, ho saw Mrs. Grayblll enter a summer bouse, leaving a red bat on tbo railing out side. The "Morphology" grew uninterest ing. Craighead stepped from tho win dow, went into tbe summer house and started at finding Mrs. Grayblll there, her hair tousled about bcr head, her little nose Wevuted in that comical re semblauce to her father's. "Mr. Wad dy Informs me that tbe late Mr. Gray blll was a minister of tho gospel," be ventured. "Yes," she replied, "he was." "And that he has been called." Craig head went on. "to a better life a year or more?" "Fourteen months," answered Mrs. Grayblll. "I have been reading." said Craig head, "a work on the 'Morphology of the Crawfish It holds me entbrallc Tho person who falls to glean wisdom from the crawfish has never tested his Intelligence with a baro toe or studied his morphology." Mrs. Grayblll looked at Craighead sternly (To Be ContinaerYj CIRCUS FULL OP LAL'GIITEK Itanium and Bailey Show Has Fifty of "World's Funniest Clowns.
