Medford Mall Tribune, Medford, Oregon To tho Editer: Through the columns of your paper I desire to announce myself as a candidate for represen tative to tho state legislature in the republican primaries. It 13 right and due tho people of Jackson county that they know just where the candidates for a political office stand at the opening of the campaign. The com ing olection will bo a contest as to tho right of the people to rule without fear or favor of a few machine poli ticians working under the cloak of the assembly. I bollove in progressive republic anism, which means Justice to every man. I am in favor of the initiative, referendum and recall. The right of tho people to elect their public officials amounts to but little when the right to nominate these officials is taken away. There fore I favor the direct primaries and am opposed to tho assembly, which stands for a government of the few for the privileged classes. I am against all railroad and corporate In fluence In politics. I favor Statement No. One for It enables the people of Oregon to choose their United States senators, the legislators who represent the peo ple simply registering the people's choice. I favor the income tax amendment to the Constitution of the United States. I believe that free text books should be furnished to every child in our public schools. If nominated and elected, I shall represent all sections of Jackson county fairly and impartially. If the people send raeto the leglslaturd, I shall favor tho enactment into law of those political and moral principles which will uplift tho community, the state and the nation. The republican party was born as a party of freedom and progress. I believe In tho ideals and principles that gave birth to the republican par ty and therefore am persuaded that I can be3t serve my party by rightly serving the people. The Issue of this campaign as far as the legislature is concerned Is that of tho primary vs. the assembly, the right of tho people to rule as against the rule of the few working through tho assembly. It Is a contest to de cide whether the plain people, as Lin coln loved to call them, shall rule for tho benefit of all, or the few, con trolled by selfishness and by privi lege, shall make of tho party of Lin coln a party of special interests, by special Interests, and for special in terests. This Is not ray fight; it is the people's fight. Upon this Issue I offer myself as a candidate for the legislature in the republican prima ries. Respectfully yours, FRED W. MEARS.
