Fortunately for most of us wo are sot compelled to follow our own ad Tfce. Man Is tow, woman a Bpark and his Satanic majesty works the bel lows. When it comes to repeating Itself gossip has history beaten to a fraz xsl. The chief end of a man is the one when he gives the undertaker a Job. On the other hand did you ever hear of a man marrying a woman to xeform her? It's useless to go where duty calls "as unless you aro going to get busy Iter you get thero. We'll never hrve Government own ership until congress lets the people own the Government. After lots of men have done their duty they hang around and wait for people to npplcud them. A woman need not doubt her hus band's lovo if he refuses to allow her to eat her own cooking. Thero is probably nothing quite so unsatisfactory as friendship that re quires constant nursing , Some times a woman keeps on tolling people how smart her husband is until she naturally believes It her elf. AN amazing instance of the pot calling the kettle black has added to the gnsto of the summer silly season in Oregon. The Hon. C. B. JM cores in a three-column ar ticle in the Oregonian, turned scandal monger and revamp ed the political flotsam and jetsam of the deadlock series of the Oregon legislature of fifteen years or so ago. One had to look a second time to be sure that it was the Orego nian and not the Sunday Mercury he was reading so sim ilar was the literature. The incidents may be true or they may be mere idle tittle-tattle. Mr. Moores ought to lenow. He was one of the "boys" who participated in the holdup. However, they are revamped at this late day for the sole purpose of besmirching the character of politicians who favor the direct primary which the Oregonian does not. Not a word is said about those other participants and recipients and disburscrs now flocking under the Oregonian 's ban- I ner. Neither is anything said pot" of $25,000 disbursed at a subsequent session in a futile effort to elect a famous editor senator. In support of liis charges made against Colonel E. Ho fer of the Salem Journal, Mr. Moores, who for his political services, was awarded with a federal job. cites as witness to !Mr. Hofer's guilt, that paragon o political purity, L. H. McMahan, who, after a career of jury spotting for Francis J. Heney, and playing watchdog for the state treasury, to keep the money in Salem by blocking the con struction of the Crater Lake highway, has become moral mentor for President Taft in the selection of the federal brigade. JSli: Moores' charges had attracted some attention un til it was found that meddlesome Mr. McMahan was spon sor then they collapsed and left Mr. Moores in rather a ridiculous plight. But the scandals of lq years ago point a moral that does not adorn Mr. Moores' tale. They were the fruits of the oenvention system, of the old order of things now impossible in Oregon because of Statement One and the direct primary law that has .shorn the politicians of their power, even as Sampson of old was shorn, when he lost his locks. And even as Sampson prayed for a'restoration of his powers, the politicians are again seeking theirs, that they may pull down in ruin the republican party in Oregon even as Sampson pulled down the temple of the Philis tines. No matter what the scandals of senatorial elections of the past have been, they cannot be re-enacted unless the people restore the politicians to power by abolishing Statement One, and as the- people, who have once tasted the sweets of power, will be loth to surrender it, the out look is dark for the politicians. But they don't realize it Portland politicians never know what the people of Oregon want and rush blindly to their ruin. CALHOUN TO ASK FOR HABEAS CORPUS WRIT SAN" FRANCISCO, Cal., July 21. On Monday next u writ of habeas corpus applied for by Patrick Cal houn, president of the United Rail ways company, under indictment for bribery, by which ho seeks u dis missal of the indictments against him, will be returnable before the su preme court. The writ was applied for and is sued by Justice Beatty yesterday. Calhoun asks that the indictments be dismissed on tho ground that he has not been tried as speedily as the lair requires. In accord with the law, Calhoun surrendered himself to the sheriff and Justice Beatty fixed his bail on the writ at $150,000, which was furn ished. A DEA1 STOMACH. Of What Uso Is It to Anyone? Thousands? yes hundreds of thou sands of people throughout America aro taking the slow death treatment daily. They are murdering their own stomach, the best friend thoy have, and in their sublime ignorance they think they are putting usidc the laws of nature. This is no sensational statement; it is a startling fact, tho truth of which any honorable physician will not deny. Theso thousands of people are swallowing daily huge quantities of popsia and other strong digesters, made especially to digest the food in the stomach without any aid at all from the digestive membrano of the stomach. In other words, they are taking from tho stomuch the work that na ture intended it should do, and are also refusing it the only chance foi oxerciso it has. Mi-o-nu stomach tablets teliove distressed stomach in five minutes ; thoy do more. Taken regularly for a few weeks thoy build up the run down stomuoh and muko it strong enough to digest its own food, Then indigestion, belching, sour stomach about the celebrated "jack and headache will go. Mi-o-na stomach tablets are sold by druggists everywhere and by Charles Strang, who guarantees them. Fifty cents a box. NOTICE.
