And so It was that Miss Keith becamo tho first lady to drlvo an nutomobllo in tho valloy. Herself. (BY "JUDGE.") Crater Lake is lifted high in the amis of tho mighty Cnscado rnugo of mountains. Nature seems to have placed this pearl of sublimo beauty amid tho wildest surroundings in order to ovoko nud call for the man's most dnrinir snirit. Until Au gust, 1908, tho automobile, man's lat est triumph in eliminating timo and space, had not yet ventured to pene trato tho wilds which intorveno be tween tho city of Medford nnd tho bold summits that look down upon tho imprisoned waters of tho lake. It was known nt that timo thnt E. II. nnrrimnn, tho king figuro in tho rail road world, was going to como up from his hunting lodge in Klamath county and spend n few days at tho lako and tho committco of tho Med ford Commoroial club was anxious to meet him thoro nnd bring him to Medford. A party wns organized with five nutos. Mrs. John I). Olwoll drove tho ouo in tho lead. Sho covered tlio distunco of 83 milos to tho lake in ton nud one-half hours of contin uous travel. Sho rushed it throuch Union crook, ovor tho rooks and tho dashing flood tit a furious speed, for it scomod a doubtful attempt nt host. Tho swift water rushed tho bed of tho machine nnd carried away Judge Colvui's "field classes" (1). but luokily Wos Green, ono of tho party, found them n hnlf muo bolow, lodg ed in n drift. (MRS. EDGAE HAFER.) From the map I learn that Crater lako is 85 miles distant from Med Iford, and at 7 o'clock in tho morn ing, when driving over Bear creek bridge, these figures seem to be cor rect. But by dusk Crater lako is physically computed to bo farther I from tho starting point than Halloy's comet is from tho earth at sunrise today. Asido from discovering this slight error iu mileage, I foil to note any unusual scencrv en route. In fact, think tho trip from that point of view has been much exaggerated. I saw nothing but crooked, dusty roads, piles of rock, flocks of stumps and a continuous streak of brush, with nn occasional stream to bar tho way. Tho last five miles in tho final nscont to tho rim of tho lako is mado by steering tho car with ono hand whilo with tho othor you throw rocks under tho rear wheols ns tho car ad vances, inch by inch. Meanwhile, the right foot is busily engaged foroing gas into tho tired motors, tho left foot is kept freo for the oft-nntici-patcd lenp, should tho car slide overboard. Whon just begiuning to think I had really tackled a strong man's job, unexpectedly ran my car out upon n narrow ledgo of rock, and lo I there beneath mo 1000 feot lay Crntor lako, of which no pen or brush has, as yot, faithfully givon to tho world nn ndequnto description of its sconio grnndour.
