So much advertising came in last evening that to get in, "scads" of "dope" of the utmost impor tance went into the pi-box in stead of the forms. We coaxed, cajoled, tweedled but all to no avail. "Oct the money," was the cry Finally it was left to the flip of a coin whether all the ads should run or not the ads won. Hence this apology. The business staff says we have made about $1,200. Hut, oh ! thiso perfectly lovely stories which were crowded out. S? In way of compensation, we will run our cuts' and a number of special articles next Sunday. At a meeting of the school board Friday evening at the high school building the resignation of Prof. U. G. Smith as superintendent of the city schools wus accepted und Prof. U. S. Collins, present principal of the high school was elected to fill' the vacancy cnused by Superinten dent Smith's resignation. Mr. Smith has recently purchased a fine ranch in the Willamette valley near Al bany and it is understood that his resignation coming at this time is a voluntary matter. John Harrington was much per turbed Saturday morning to find the back door of his saloon on Front street wide open to tho cold, gray davn and $50, the receipts of Fri day's business, gone. Some time after 1 o'clock Saturday morning a hole was bored In tho back door, the bar inside lifted, and the Jock oprung. The miscreants enter ed, disturbing nothing, restrained themselves from tempting rows of cigars and Tree drinks, and satisfied themselves with lifting a modest pile of $50 from an unlocked locker, be fore making their get-away. It Is supposed that they derived their knowledge of the whereabouts of Harrington's coin by peering in tho windows at the time he cached it un der some aprons in a locker.
