2 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, TODTTORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, APRI L 15, 1910. RAINEY FLAYS ' SUGAR TRUST In Bitter Speech, Illinois Democrat Charges That Taft Was Nominated and Elected by Sugar Trust That Trust Steals Continually From tho Public Treasury. "MOST CORRUPT COMBINE OF WHOLE TARIFF SYSTEM" Vituperative Attack Hado on Wick ersham and on Brother of Presi dent Says Trust Controls Cuba. CHARGES MADE BY REPRESENTATIVE -r . That President Taft wns "nominated and elected by the sugar trust." That Henry W. Taft, broth er of the president, was a sugar trust attorney, as was also George W. Wiekersham, prior to becoming attorney general. That tho sugar trust saved $125,000,000 by settling for $2,000,000 tho customs frauds. That officials of tho trust, despite their stealing of mil lions," still go about in pri vate yachts. ' That the men who "contrib uted millions to tho campaign fund are permitted to now reimburse themselves by stealing from the treasury." That the trust contributed from $10,000,000 to $20,000, 000 to the Republican cam paign funds in 1896. That the trust controls Cuba and Cuban politics. That Representative Herb ert Parsons' (Rep. N. Y.) is a sugar trust attorney. I WASHINGTON, April 15. That the sugar trust dominates the Re publican party and officers of the present administration are its pup pets, was charged on the floor of the house late Thursday by. Representa tive Henry T. Rainey (Dem., HI.) in a vituperative assault on Attorney General Wiekersham, Henry W. Taft, brother of the president; Repre sentative Herbert Parsons, former head of the Republican county com mittee of New York, and a score of other public men. "Tho sugar trust is the most rot ten and corrupt combine ever created by the protective tariff system," Rainey asserted. "Prominent stockholders and di rectors of tho trust have succeeded, through their control of the Repub lican party in bringing about this most delightful arrangement the attorney-general was, until his ap pointment, a sugar trust attorney, familjar with the methods of the su gar trust, exhibiting even now a re markable sympathy for its officials in their difficulties. The general counsel for the sugar trust (James M. Beck), is an ex-assistant attorney-general of the United States, loyal to the Republican party, famil iar with the methods and with the feeerets of the attorney-general's of--fice. The brother of the president of tho United States is one of the nttornoys for the sugar trust. Ji E. Parsons, the father of the ex-president of tho New York county Repub lican committeo, is under indictment on account of his offense against the city of Philadelphia. And the presi dent of the United States has ad vised against a congressional investi .galion of tho sugar trust, for the o-eason that it might prove embarras sing. "In New York tho Republican county central committeo is and has been for some years a sugar trust combination, getting its funds from the sugar trust, looking to the sugar trust attorneys for its presiding of ficers. Tho nomination of. tho Re publican candidate for the presi , dctfoy in the last national campaign was brought about first by tho activ ities of the president of the United States, at whose command 50,000 postoffice officials throughout the country became active and tho en tiro machinery of the Republican ad ministration was sot to work to bring about tho nomination of Mr. Taft. Next in importance in tho agencies contributing to his nomina tion and election was the sugar trust owned, sugar trust-controlled Repub lican Nqw York central committeo. ! "To these groat influences, by those groat agencies, the action of the last Republican national conven tion was dictated, The activities of the New York county Republican committee to bring about tho nomin ation of President Taft commenced almost ns soon as tho activities in that direction of President Roose velt. "Herbert Parsons is n sugar trust attorney, is tho son ot John L. Par sons, who organized the sugar trust, who directed its crimo for years, and who is now under indictment charged with wreckiug the real estate com pany of Philadelphia, and whoso only hopo for cscapo seems to lie in his right to interpose the bar of the statute of limitations the same Par sons who retained tho firm of Strong & Cndwaladcr as sugar trust attor neys, and who is now able to exer cise oxer the ntlonioy-general of tho United fetntes so nuuli ufluence." Ka.nt.. referred to the dilemma xvith xh'ch the trust fomui itself confronted recently on account wf tho attempt to xvreck tho Pennsyl vania Sugar Refining company ami the admitted thefts on tho Williams burg xvlmrvcs. Out of the Philadel phia troublo grew tho failure of tho Real Estate company and the suicide of Frank Hippie. He stated that in this difficulty the tmst appealed to. the law firm of Strong & Cadwal- der of Aew lork "one of those mi portnnt Now York City legal firms to xvhich great corporations appeal for aid when they propose to violnto the laws of the land or wheu they have violated tho laws of the land." The Illinois representative named the members of that firm', among them George W. Wiekersham, second senior member. Henry W. Taft xvas fourth. He declared that wheu Wiekersham was appointed attorney general, lienry . Tan moved up to number two place. Next he spe cified by page in tho Federal Report er, where tho name of Henry W. Taft could be found, recorded as trust at torney. Continuing, Rainey discussed At torney-General Wickersham's denial of the recent chnrges made by Rep resentative Martin (Dem., Colo.) in tho house, that he recoix-cd fees from the sugar trust. He declared that the statement was "read into tho Record in x-iolntion of the rules of the house," and sarcastically de manded further information on tho matter. "I submit," he said, "that the attorney-general ought not to seek to avoid ox-en the inactive con nection with this infamous trust by throwing the entire burden and the disgrace of such connection upon the brother of the president." .
