CHAPTER XX. THE LAST BTAKD. SOON after 6 o'clock a man In the topmost window of the tower called down that the forces In tho bills were moving in a com "fact body toward the ridges below the "southern pates. One hundred picked men were to be -Jcft Inside the castle gates with Vos jEngo, prepared to meet any flank move ment that might bo attempted. Threb hundred mounted men were selected to laakc the dash down Castle avenue straight Into the camp of the sharp shooters. It was the purpose of the bouse guards to wage a fierce and noisy conflict off the avenue and then retire to tho castle as abruptly as they left It, to be ready for Marlanx should be decide to make a final desperato effort to seise their stronghold. The dash of tho 800 through the gates asd down the avenue was the mo3t spectacular experience in Truxton's HTc. lie was up with Qulnnox and General Braze, galloping well In front ef the yelling troops. These mounted 'carbineers, riding as Bedouins, swept 3Hre thunder down tho street, whirled Sato tho broad, open arena beyond the ake's palace and were upon the sur prised radians before they were fully mwakc to the situation. They came tumbling out of bams and "feeds, clutching their rifles In nerveless tends, aghast In the face of absolute destruction. The enemy, craven at tho atsct, threw down their guns and tried to cscapo through the alleys and side streets at the end of the common. Fir teg all the time, tho attacking force rede them down as If they were bo SBony dogs. After ten or fifteen minutes of this desultory carnage it was reported that x large force of men were entering tho avenue from Regcngetz circus. Quln nox sent his chargers toward this great .bottle of foot soldiers, but they did not Salter, as ho had expected. On they swept, 2,000 or 3,000 of them. At their iKxid rode flvo or six officers. Tho fore 3Bost was Count Marlanx. Qulnnox saw now that the Iron Count was determined to storm the '.Kates and gave the command to re treat Waving their rifles and shout ing defiance over their shoulders, the dragoons drew up, wheeled and gal sfcoped toward the gates. Scarcely were the massive portals elo-scd and the great steel bars drop ped Into place by tho men who attend d them when a low, dull explosion 'shook tho earth as if by volcanic force. TThen came the crashing of timbers, ilio cracking of masonry, the whirring T a thousand missiles through the Ir. Before the very eyes of the dtnuned, bewildered defenders, dis mounting near the parade ground, the Jtago gates and pillars fell to tho ground. , The gates had been dynamited. Then it was that Truxton King re membered. Marlanx's Bappers had tuxn quietly at work for days drilling jfrom tho common to the gates. It was strange coincidence that Marlanx .should have chosen this day for his Wlmhiatlpg assault on the castle. The sklrmlsh at daybreak hud hurried his arrangements no doubt, but none the ats were his plans complete, Tho ex plosives had been laid during tho night. Tho fuses reached to the mouth of the tuuuei across the common. As he swept up the avenue at the bond of .tils command, hawk faced and with glittering eyes, ho snarled the com umnd thut put fire to the fuse's. A moment later his vanguard stream--cd through the aperture and faced tho doaJly fire from the driveway. At lust they began to advauco across the grassy meadow. Whon ono man ell under tho lire of tho guardsmen another rushed Into hU place. Three times tho Indomitable Graustarklans drove them buck and us often did Mar lanx drag them up again, exalted by tho example ho set. "Gad, he Is a soldier!" cried Trux ton. "Hello! There's my friend Bru tus, no's no coward etther. Here's try for you, Brutus." Ho dropped to his knee and took do libera to aim at tho frenzied henchman. Tho discovery that there wero fbreo .bullets In Brutus' breast when ho was. Tpickcd up long afterward did not af fect tho young man's contention that Us was tho ono that bad found the Jwart. , Tho fall of Brutus urged tho Iron Count to greater fury. His horso had keen shot from under him. Ho was m his foot, calling to his men to fol low him as be moved toward the stub orn row of green and red. Bullets klnscd about his ears, but ho gave no Jbecd to them. Tho commander of tho guard gave tho command to fall back slowly to ward tho custle. Firing at every step, they crossed tho parade ground and then made u ick dash for tho shelter of tho long balconies. Marlanx, down in the pu jdo ground, was fairly pushing his sea into tho Jaws of death. Truxton King's chuueo to pay his debt to Vos Knpo came nfter ono of the fiercest, most determined charges. The young count had been lighting desperately for some time. His weak ness seemed to have disappeared. As tho foo fell back In tho face of des perato resistance Vos Knjro sprang down tho steps and rushed after them. calling others to Join hint In the nt tempt to complete tho rout. Near the edge of tho terrnco ho stopped. His leg gavo way under him, and he fell to the ground. Truxton saw him .fall He leaped over tho low balustrade. dropping his hot rtile, and dashed across tho terrace to his rival's assist nuco. A hundred men shot at him. "It's my turn!" shouted tho Ameri can. "I'll square it up if I can. Then we'ro cvenl" Ho seized the wounded man in his strong arms, threw him over his shoul der and staggered townrd tho steps. "Release me, curse your shrieked Vos Engo, striking his rescuer in the faco with his flst "I'm saving you for another day," said King as ho dropped behind tho balustrade with his burden safe. There were other witnesses to Trux ton's rash act. In a lofty window of tho north wlug crouched a white faced girl and a grliu old man. The latter held a rifle in his tense though feeble old hands. Now and then the old man would sight his rifle and fire. The girl who crouched beside him was there to designate a certain figure In tho ever changing mass of humanity on tho bloody parade ground. Her clear eyes sought for and found Marlanx; her un wavering finger pointed him out to tho old marksman. Sho saw Vos Engo fall. Then n tall. well known figure sprang Into view. dashing townrd her wounded lover. Her heart stopped beating. With her hands to her tcmplos sho leaned far over tho window ledge and .1 ns he reached her side. "It's not my" He stopped short oven ns hu held out ills arms to clasp her to his breast. "It's some one else's blood," ho finished resolutely. She swayed ! toward him, and ho caught her In his arms. "I love yon oti, I lovo you, Trux tonl" she cried over and over agnlu. He was faint with Joy. His kisses spoke the udorntlou he would hiwo cried out to her If emotion had not clogged his throat. "Eric," she whispered nt last, draw ing kick In his arms nud looking up Into his eyes with n great pity In her own. "Is he Is he dead, Truxton?" "No," ho said gontly: "badly hurt. but"- "no will not die? Thank God. Truxtun. He Is a brave oh, a Tory bravo man I" Loaderlcss between tho deadly fires, tho mercenaries gavo up tho fight after a brief stand nt the terrace. Tho prince reigned again. (To Bo Continued.) "xnnx- TON I TJltrXTON!" screamed screamed words Mint would have filled Truxton King with an end less Joy could he have heard them, above the rattle of the rifles. The corner of the building had shut out tho picture. It was Impossible for her to know that the man and his burden had reached the balcony In safety. Even now they might bo ly ing on the terrace, riddled by bullets. Tho old man roused her from the stupor of dread, ne called her name. Dully she responded. Stnndlng bolt upright in tho window, she sought out the figure of Marlanx and pointed rigidly. "Ah," groaned 'the old man, "they Will not be driven back this time: They will not bo denied. It Is the last charge! God, how they come. Our men will be annihilated In Where is he? Now! Ah, I see! l'cs that is he! He is near enough now. 1 ?annot miss him!" Marlanx was leading his men up to the terrace. At the top of the terraco tho Iron Count suddenly stopped. His Ioiik body stiffened and then crumpled like a reed. A score of heavy feet tram pled on tho fallen loader, but ho did not feel the impact. A bullet from tho north wing hud crashed into his brain. "At last!" shrieked tho old man at the window. "Come." Miss Tullls; my work is done." "Ho Is dead, your grace?" In low. awed tones. "Yes, my dear," said tho Duke of Terse, n smile of rellof on his faco. "Come, let mo escort you to tho prince You hnvo beon most courageous." A group of terrified women were huddled In tho far corner of u near by room. Tho Duke of Terse held open tho door for Lorulne Tullls, but she did not enter. When ho turned to cnll sho was halfway down tho top flight of Htulrs, racing through the powder smoke toward tho landing be low. At every step sho was screaming In tho very ngouy of gladness: "Stand firm! Hold them! Help is coming! Help is coming!" A last look through tho window at tho end of tho hall had revealed to her tho most glorious of visions. Bod and green troops wero pouring through tho dismantled gateway, their horses surging over the ugly ground rifts and debris as if possessed of the fabled wings. Her brother was out there, and all was woll. Sho was crying tho Joyous nows from tho head of tho grand stairway when Truxton King caught sight of her. Ho was powder stained and grimy. There was blood on his faco and shirt front "You aro shot!" sho .cried, clutching tho post at tho bend In tho stairs. "Truxton! Truxton!" "Hot even scratched I" ho shouted J Probato Court.
