DES MOINES, la., April 1. With
the authorities of a score of Iowa
cities aroused by the recent discovery
on doorsteps of very young babies,
packed snugly In well ventilated suit
cases, tho polico of Des Moines aro
working today on tho theory that tho
infants have been felt by representa
tives of an organization that Is reap
ing a rich harvest by trafficking in
babies.
Following a report by a Des Moines
artist, who has an International repu
tation, that he bad learned something
of tho unusual business, tho officers
of tho Iowa Humane society today
started an Independent Investigation.
This man declared that while re
turning to Des Moines from Chicago

cated and cultured woman, who was
a passenger on ms tram, miormea
him that sho received from $50 to
$100 for every unwelcome baby for
which sho (could find a homo. Ac
cording to his story, sho admitted
that methods of home-finding that
might bo termed "unusual" some
times wero employed. The humano
officers have estimated that at least
58 babies bavo been disposed of by
this sultcaso-doorstep method, within
tho last thrco months. Thoy bavo
asked tho municipal authorities to
assign detectives to tho caso.

CHICAGO, 111., April 1. It was

purpose of ascertaining what rates

tho projected raise in tariffs will bo

A high officinl of ono of tho west

saying that all of tho commodities
rates aro too low and wero made

of cut-throat competition.
IIo concluded by snying that those
days are now passed. Among soino
of the commodities on which tho
rates may possibly bo raised aro
brick, comont, tiling, steel and iron
