The popularity of the lake is uicrcnsinc each year. The roads will bo in better condition than ever before and tho number of motorists on tho coast this year will exceed those of last season by more than 10,000. Practically nil of these tourists to the lako will pass through Medford. Most of them will stop over night in this city for tho purpose of Retthip; their machines oiled up and stocked with gasoline before attempting the trip. From this city the motorists will travel leisurely up Rogue River by way of Trail nnd Prospect and out on" the Idnninth side, or will go in by Klamath nnd come out by Med ford. Tho scenery all along the route is magnificent nnd the high way winds around tho mountain sides through magnificent pine for ests at an elevation of several thou sand feet. It is estimated that about 500 ma chines made tho trip to Crater Lake last year. This will undoubtedly bo doubled this year. The highway wns kept in fairly good condition for n mountain road last year, nnd will be even better this year, especially in the national forest. Local dealers look for heavy travel this year. AUTOMOBILE BUSINESS IS FAST INCREASING A number of people have gone to California or Portland to pur chase automobiles, although tho same make of car could have boon purch ased here. They secured the cars no cheaper thereby, and merely took away niouey from their home city. "Patronize- homo industry" is a slogan necessary to build up any city and Medford cannot support first class garages and automobile estab lishments if citizens hike to foreign cities to buy their cars. The foreign dealer spends no money in Medford, pays no Jacksoir county taxes, contributes nothing to repair local roads, buys no grdcer ies and pays nox rent here. Why should anyone be so unpatriotic as to go away from homo to get a car, when he might buy it through a lo cal dealer and leave part of the money to upbuild the Rogue River valley t WASHINGTON. -Feb. 2C Auto mobiles entering the world's markets In the year 1909 had a value In ex cess of 850,000,000, as compared with an aggrecate value of 19,000. 000 for the year 1902, striking evi dence, according to tho bureau of statistics of tho department of com merce and labor, that the automobile Is an important and rapidly increas ing factor in, international commerce. The value of automobiles exported in 1908 from France, tho United States, tho United Kingdom, Italy and Germany, the five leading coun tries in their manufacture and sale, was more than $45,000,000. or a growth of 400 per cent since 192. Automobile exports in the four for eien countries named increased within tho ten years from $8,000,- ,000 to $39,000,000, a gain of 385 ner cent. Exnorts of automobiles from , the United States in tho same period 'increased from $1,000,000 to $5,000, 000, a gain since 1S92 of more than 1450 per cent. France leads the world as an ex- porter of cars, with tho United States 'second. Some of the figures given by the bureau of statistics show the automobile exports in 1908 from ( France to have been valued at $24,- &GU,uuu; irom me unuea amies m 1909, $8,667,397; tho United King dom in 1909, $7,610,267; Italy In 190S, ,$5,533,000, and Germany in 1908, $3,031,000. Of the automobiles shipped from the United States In 1909, seven and three-quarters million dollars' worth went to foreign countries, and less .than a million dollars' worth to the non-contiguous territories of the na tion Although tho season has scarcely begun, a carload of Uuick has al ready been sold in Medford and de livered, and two more carloads or dered. Purchasers ev erwhero aro now besieging dealers or their cars, anxious to cet them In use as soon as tho first warmth of spring is felt. At this season, too, tho Chalmers Motor company Is distrib uting its 1910 Instruction book among all Chnlmers owners. This manual of autoraotllo lore is neatly bound in heavy brown paper and Is fully illusctrated with pictures of the Chalmers cars and of the vari ous parts about which tho user should bo Informed. Tho text comprises a No loss than additional auto mohilbs hnvo boon sold already this season to residents of Medford and vicinity, ami ninuy additional or ders are being placed from day to day. All of tho dealers report the demand brisk and many of them are regretting that they cannot double the allotment given them by tho manufacturers. Medford leads the world in auto mobiles por capita, having at tho cIosq of last season one car to each 30 persons. Tho city is increasing in imputation rapidly, but owing to the large number of cars being pur chased, the ratio should be main tained. The Rogue River valley, with its multitude of sido trips to pointH of interest, easily accossiblo by tour ing cars, is splendidly conducive to giving tho greatest pleasure to mo torists. Thu automobile is not a luxury in the Rogue River vnlley it is a ne cessity. Long, level roads travers ing the valley from ono end to the other mnko it practical. On tho lower floor of the garago there will ho a ladies' waiting room, fully equipped, and this floor will bo cemented throughout. Ample room for the storage of tho machines of tho patrons and those of tho com pany also nro provided. The second floor will contain the repair shop. A crippled auto will be hoisted to tho second floor and there rennired. A complete system of checking has been inaugurated, showing just tho amount of work, the time, material nnd everything which goes in that line. Ono of the features of this gar age will be that no repairing or inn chine work will bo done on the lower floor. It will bo as cleanly as a par lor all tho time.
