rick H. McCarthy, the union labor leader,
became' mayor of San Francisco at noon
today, succeeding mayor Edward D. Tay
lor. Tho retiring board of supervisors met
nnd "welcomed the newly elected mem
bers who thereupon took charge of the
city's affairs.
'William R. Haggcrty, chairman of the
last union labor party convention, was
elected' clerk of tho board. The com
mittee chairmanships were announced,
showing that in each Instance a union
labor man had been chosen.
With the board of supervisors organ
ized in this manner the new union labor
administration has complete control
oyer the city government, representa
tives oi all other parties being In the
Minority.
Mayor McCarthy in his first message
to the supervisors outlined his policies
and laid down a vigorous program of ac
tion under which the administration will
assume the burdens of a number of
g-wat municipal problems which it must
solve.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., Jan. 8. Upo

KILLED AT JACKSONVILLE
ANDERSON, Indiana, Jan. 8. The'
children of Mrs. Maggie Stroud, mother
of eighteen, were hungry and cold today
because their mother and btcadwlnncr
languished In Jail.
Mrs. Stroud was arrested for stealing ,
coal from a railway car with which to
keep from freezing. She was hauled be-
foro the polico Judge today and held to ;
tho circuit court. j
Mrs. Stroud wept .bitterly when the'
decision was given and begged to bo re-
leased. There was no one to caro for.
her sick and half-starved children she!
said. She had been unable to get work 1
with which to buy fuel and food and
only resolved on theft when her older
children were thrown out of employ-'
mont and her money ran out. 1
Mrs. Stroud did not have time to warm 1
her home with the coal she took from a
coal car standing on the tracks nearby.
Someone had seen her and the police
took her to the city jail before she
reached home with her load.

for the murder of Ethel Maxwell in Jack-
Miss., in February, 1909. Ferguson ad
mlttcd that he was the man wanted. lie
bad already unwittingly confessed to a
private detective that he had "pulled
off a Job down south which would send
bis to hell If it were known." At tho
same time he showed a photograph of
the woman and displayed a revolver
-which he always carried.

the price of ten aeroplanes if he would
give up the idea of flying in an aero
plane. The offer was mado shortly be
fore Harmon made an ascension in his
balloon "New York," from Tournament
park at Pasadena today. Hermon was
In the basket, and the signal had been
given to "cut away" when Benedict
stepped close to the basket and said:
'Cliff, I don't mind ascension a bit
I know It is safe, but I want to tell
you right now that If you give up the
notion of flying in an aeroplane next
week, I will give you the prlco of ten
aeroplanes. Of course, you understand.
It is not so much on account of my con
suming love for you, but I do hate the
Idea of my daughter mourning and hav
ing to appear In widow's weeds."
Harmon, who is worth a few hundred
thousand himself, laughed, but his reply
was drowned in tho roar of the specta

FLEET WILL SPEND THE
WINTER AT MAGDALENA
VALEJO, Cal., Jan. 8. A change in
the program for the Pacific fleet was
announced unofficially hero today when
it became known that tho ships will not
come to the navy yard this winter or
spring, as had been planned.
When the first arrives from the Ori
ent on February 15, it will remain for
ten days in San Francisco harbor, and
then proceed Immediately to Magdalena
bay for target practice. The previous
program was to bring tho ships here,
and for them to remain at tho yards
several months for repairs.
