In God's puro sunshine - ho can follow tho simple life, breath puro mountain air and lead tho life worth whllo. Thoro Is physical exercise a plenty -to rebuild tho body, retresn tno jaaoa mind and restore fading health, and train work sufficient to exorcise all the faculties, for tho successful or chnrdlst must possess those qualities that mak0 for success In the com mercial world. There is ample time for leisure, study and recreation fcenco fruit raising is the Ideal oc cupation tor tho man of culture tho gentleman. In tho Iloguo River valley, condi tions aro Ideal. Hence wo find tho lilghcst grade of Intelligence, men who have made names In tho pro fessions, on tho stock exchange and "In commerce, men from all sections or tho globe, among tho orchardlsts of tho valley and In lovo with their .occupation. No place In th0 world does finer fruit grow, apples, pears and peaches that command the highest prices In . all markets of the world, returns that net as high as J1000 an acre to tho Krowcr, and sometimes higher. Bart lett pears that yielded $2250 an . acre on' the Bear Creek orchard, Co rnice pears from tho Hlllcrest or- chard sold at U0.0S a box In Lon don. Winter Nells pears have netted -$15.50 a tree tho entire orchard, "Newtown Pippin apples averago the grower from ?2 to $3 a box at tho -orchard ana nearly ino enure croji i goes to England, and SplUenbergs j yield even morP and aro tno ravorue fruit of New York swelldom. Re turns so far received this season show that Spltzenberga havo netted $1500 an acre, Newtowns $1420 an acre. Bartletts $10S0 an acre. tl'AnJous 32O0 an acre, 7-year-old Howells $718 per acre, while even tho "despised Ben Davis has yielded $500- "an aero. Pleaches yield $500 -an aero and other fruits In propor tion. Nowhero ar0 apples and pears so prolific. Ono Yellow Newtown tree " In tho Mountain View orchard at Talent yielded 57 boxes this season, and from 23 acres 12,000 boxes were picked. The Norcross Central "Point Newtowns produced 592 boxes per acre. A yield of 540 boxes to -the acre was the record of tho Tron son & Guthrie Spltzenberg orchard -which averaged $1620 per acre. A -yield of 600 boxes of Bartlett pears to tho acre, of 435 boxes of Winter Nells and of from 300 to 500 boxes v an aero of Howells, of 500 an acre of d'AnJous and Cornice, Is not at all uncommon. Theso prize com mercial varieties, shy bearers In most districts, aro as prolific In the Hoguo River valley as tho cheap va rieties elsewhere, and orchards be come avenues ot props to support the tenormous yields. Iloguo River pears took all the Brst prizes at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific exposition. Rogue River apples won sweepstakes and flrst prizes on Spltzenberg and Newtown Pippins at tho Spokane appl0 show. Tho qual .'ity ot fruit produced Is unexcelled anywhere. Pear conditions are most favorable In tho world for high prices, as the yield matures after the California crop Is exhausted and be fore the local eastorn crop is mar keted, while the superior keeping quality enables fruit to stand ship ment to any point. As -not over 2000 acres of the 50, 000 acres planted around Medford aro In bearing, and as this fractional "bearing acreage Is iq most instances paying all expenses for caring for tho entire planted acreage and In ad aitlon making money for the owner, the above figures offer a suggestion of what the profits to local fruit growers will be within a few years, for fruitgrowing is still In Its ln- . fancy in tho Roguo Rtvor valley. Fruit buyers all admit that there la an increasing demand for fancy fruit at fancy prices, and tho sections producing it aro so limited In area that there is no -danger of over-pro- ductlon. Despite tho Increased or chard area of tho Northwest, there Is an annual decrease In tho fruit out put of tho United States, and more orchards aro yearly abandored In tho East and Central West than aro planted in tho Northwest. Pear dis tricts ar0 tow and tho demand great. THE CITY OF MEDFORD. MEDFORD ciiollB progress anil mu nicipal advancement; It Is tho r-ost m ttropolli.fa Ein.ill city In tho world and Its population tho most cosmopolitan, a citizenship that has tho utmost faith In the city's futuro and works as a unit to realize Its destiny tho metropolis of that vast region between Portland and San Francisco. Medford Is a city of some 7500 in habitants whoro two years ago thero was a village with a scant 3500, wlth tho finest climate In Oregon, In the center of ono of earth's richest, fair est and most plcturesquo valleys. On tbn west the hills aro underlaid with gold, on tho east with coal. A little furthor back on tho one hand is an lmmenso belt ot timber, on tho other ono of tho world's largest cop por districts. Modtord Is tho railroad center of tho present and the future. Within two years it will bo tho only city in Western Orogon except Portland to have a competing railroad and will bo connected by trolley with nearby cities. Already Us railroad business, both passenger and freight, exceeds that of any othor placo in tho state except Portland. With tho comple tion of tho railroads under construc tion and planned, will como the lum ber mills and tho smelters, mo pay rolls and population. Tho Pacific & Eastorn railroad, on which 1000 men are now rushing construction to tho Cascades and be yond, will tap th0 largest ot the re maining sugar plno belts, containing eight billion feet ot merchantable standing timber, half of which Is sugar and yellow plno. To cut this timber will reaulre seven sawmills cutting a hundred thousand feet each nor dav for 300 days in tho year for a term of 40 years, equivalent to 35 carloads a day. or over 10,000 cars a year during tho entire year, Insuring labor for over 2000 employes, or a payroll In manufacturing lumber of S3.000.000 a year. As tno iimDor Is cut, the land can bo used for ag ricultural and fruit purposes, tho elevation and slope being Ideal, and the soli, proved by experiments al ready conducted, adapted to fruit of all kinds. Over $25,000,000 in placer gold has been taken from tho soil within a few miles of Medford and each year sees a substantial Increase In the total yield. Over a million dollars spent In developing ono mine In the aj.c.. m U.E.U,..U ........ Blue Ledge district proves It ono of me sreaieai. cuppi-i u" West, and railroad and smelter will soon make it accessible and a prolific ' producer. Within sight of Medrord's door are coal mines under develop ment, with an averago vein of 12 feet, estimated to yield 2000 tons per day of fine bituminous coal. Medford has spent within n year $350,000 for a gravity water system fed from the snow-clad summit of Mt. McLaughlin, $150,000 for 20 miles of cast Iron mains in a city dis tributing system, over $100,000 for three miles ot hard surfaced pave ment, constructed 25 miles ot sewer system, many miles of cement walk and other Improvements, a greater expenditure per capita than over made by any city In tho land in tho samo length of time. During the same period over two and a quarter millions havo been spent for build ing materials for private construc tion In Medford. Medford has moro natural re sources than any placo In th0 coun try, and tho Commercial Club offers $5000 for proof to tho contrary These resources aro many and di versified. Few aro developed, others are in process of development. Any one of a dozen that might be named, properly developed, Justify tho ex istence of a city larger than Medford. All together promise a certain future and the future has arrived. THE MAIL TRIBUNE. THE Medford Mail Tribuno lo tho largest dally newspaper In tho world l .-. city tho size of Med ford.
