SNOW MA IN LUMBERING PLANET MARS WASHINGTON, Nor. 1C The Incts nnd figures contained In the forthcoming Untied States census bu reau bulletin on lumber, lnth and shingles In 190S discloses In most striking manner the. ndverso condi tions obtaining In the lumber Indus try during that year. Tho annual federal report on tho statistics of forest products Is compiled by n committee of experts from the cen bus bureau and the forest serrlce.'Tho census Is represented by W. M. Stow art, chief statistician for manufac tures, and J. E. Whclchel, expert chief of division: while R. S. KellogR, assistant forester, and A. H. Pierson. forest assistant, represent tho forest service. The heavy decrease in tho total value reported for 190S reflects tbo ascertained falling off In tho Indus try. As a result of the business de pression, tho quantity of lumber, 33, 224,369 thousand feet, board meas ure, produced in 190S was less than that for any other year for which reliable data are available since 1900. The average cut of lumber per active mill shown by the reports for 190S was but little more than 1.000,000 feet, as against near 1,400,000 feet per mill In 1907. Tho bulk of this decrease It Is stated was undoubtedly due to smaller production. The grad ual rise in tho average value is appa rent from the fact that tho price in 1900 per thousand feet at the mill for all the lumber produced wns $11.13; in 1904, $12.76; in 190C, $lG.n4; in 1907, $16. 5C; with a drop back to $15.37 in 190S. While there was an increase of 23S1, or S.3 per cent, in the number of mills engaged in tho production of lumber, there was a decrease of 7, 031,785,000 feet, or 17.5 per cent, in the total quantity of the output. In the case of most of tho states re ports were secured from a greater number of active mills for 1908 than for 1907, while, on tho other hand, the cut in 190S was generally less than In 1907. Washington, which had remarked first in lumber production for several years, still held this place in 1908. although In quantity the cut of this state was closely approached by that of Louisiana. Nearly all of tho lum ber manufactured in Wnuhlngton was of Dopglas fir, while Louisiana was (Cnlti'il I'ross l.wtseil Wlro.) UKLS1XGKOHS, Finland, Nov. IS. The Finnish diet, hto last logisln tivo body of Finland, preserved from Russian domination, wns dissolved today and the country is in an up roar. This action is regarded as the be ginning of the end of Finnish inde pendence. Undoubtedly tho Fins will oppohe the new state of affairs violently, and armed resistance of Hussin's ag gression may bo attempted. The dis solution was the result of the diet's refusal to authorize iv contribution of $4,000,000 to tho Russian military fund. Tho senate, stuffed with Russians, pnssed the measure, but the diet re jected it. For the last week Russian resi dents have been leaving Finland as fast as .possible, for fear of an up rising against them. Reports tbat the Hits were plann ing a massacre of Russians rae be lieved to be groundless, but the sit uation today is most intense. The liberty-loving Fins have seen the cloud of complete domination gradually approaching, and the blow did not strike them wholly unpre pared, j Following the dissolution of the diet, it is feared here that Russia i will proceed with the annexation of the province of Viborg, and it is ex pected that this little oasis of civ ilization and constitutionalism of the north of Europe will be overrun hy hordes of Russian onsbticks.
