George Catching, of Grants Pass, is at Riddle in charge of a contract with the Nickel Mining Co. He will erect the buildings and set up the machinery. There will be a grand 4th of July celebration at Etna postoflice on Rogue River. A fine program has been arranged and a bowery dance Will be among the attrac tions. The Medford Distilling Company have opened a warehouse in town on Front street, where they have an excellent display of goods. Mrs. Elizabeth McHatton died at. Ashland, June 4th, aged 51 years, 10 mouths and 7 days. She leaves one son 13 years old. CSTHaving had several years -experience in the east, I am prepared to do all kinds of dotitat work. Dr. Ketcham, Clarendon Hot jl. E. S. Smith, the mining expert, was in the city during the week. He expects to strike it rich at the old Gold Hill mines in a few days. The business college firm of Rigby & Hart has dissolved. The school will continue as usual under the immediate supervision of Prof. Rigby. The official count for this county was made last Saturday by County Clerk Muller, and Justices Silas J. Day, W. J. Plymalc and George S. Walton. Mrs. I. A. Weljb has received the appointment of D. D. G. M., of the Rebekah lodge of this place from Capt. A. D. Helman, G. M. of the I. O. O. F. of Oregon. Postmaster Howard, who has been at Minneapolis taking an active part in securing the re-nomination of President Harrison, may be expected home soon. Will Halley has been quite sick at his fathers place near Medford, for several days. The Piano machinery at all times takes the lead among the farmers and as Merriman & Legate, make a specialty of the Piano machinery they should be given a good share of the trade. Mr?. Ros3 has disposed of the city restaurtint business to a Mr. Eddy, of Ashland, and left for Rose burg Tuesday evening. The new proprietor will continue the busi ness at the old stand. Judge H. K. Hanna's family left for Oakland, Calif.. Monday morning where they will reside permanently. The judge will re main with us, however, and attend to bis new duties as circuit judge. - Thos. Shattuck, sheriff-elect on the People's .ticket in Josephine county, brought up a large lot of strawberries from Grants Pass last Friday and had no trouble in dis posing f them to our local deal ers. Last week wo wero pleased to mention that C. W. Wolters dis posed of something over 100 boxes of strawberries in one day, but last Saturday the record was broken by Charley selling 6t0 boxes during the dav. Evan Reames, son of Gen. Thos. G.. arrived at bis home in Jacksonville from Eugene . last Saturday, having finished his work there. He will enter some East ern law school next fall for a thorough course. , Messrs. Owen Keegan, George Schumpf and Alex Thompson, of Jacksonville, joined. Chester A. Arthur Post, G. A. R., at their last meelirg. This post has been adding several members to its list lately, and seems to.be in a flourishing condition. In anather column will be found the ad vertisem ent of the well-known merchant, Mr. J. The Italian with his cage of par rots has shaken the dust of Medford from his feet in search of pastures new. The people of Medford have no money to give to a maccaroni, garlic scented individual, who seems to healthy too earn a living bv honest toil. Law ton, the local manager, is the right man for this business and takes great pleas lire in showing visitors around." The sad news of the death of her sister, Mrs. I. B. Nichols, at Roseburg. reached Mrs. R. V. Beall, of Central Point, on Monday. The deceased was 59 years old, and J an old resident of Douglas county. ! Mr. and Mrs. R. V. Beall attended the funeral which took place at Riddles on Tuesday. A. S. Hammond mounted his b'evele Mondav and started on a trip to the coat. his objective point! being Cresent City. It is reported j that bis mission is to look out a pleasant route for his friend, Judge Webster, when he starts on his long and tedious journey up Salt river. Prof. T. A. Hayes, of Kirksville. Mo., has been elected principal of the Ashinnd public schools, and Misses Emma Ewan, Nellie Ewan, Emma Coleman, Lora M. Col ton and A. R. Latham have been se lected from the last year's corps of teachers, while the other five teach ers are to bo imported. Rev. II. Tiss, of Oakland, Calif., a minister of the Lutheran church, who is making a tour of Oregon, stopped off here several days this week. Henry Hoist showed him the eights of this great city and surrounding country. He seemed well pleased with our town and inay conclude to locate here. George Kapper. of Chicago, rep resenting a syndicate of capitalists from that city was in ' Ashland May 23d, and papers were made out for the sale of the Ashland woolen mills property to Chicago people who expect to turn it into a huge brewery. The sale has not been made, but the chances are favorable thereto. Record. The joint fair for Jackson and Josephine counties promises to be one of the best ever held in this section of Oregon. It will begin on Wednesday, Sept". 2S, and con tinue four days. Peter Applegate is secretary and with others is leaving nothing undone to make it a success. $2950 will bo awarded for premiums and $1250 for purses. Miurice E. Bain, our late associ ate, has again embarked in tho newspaper business. His paper is published in the interests of Bar low, Aurora and Canbv, Ore., and is called "Tho Three Sisters." As Mr. Bain is a notorious woman hater, we wonder what influence was brought to bear upon him that he would consent to title bis paper "Tho Three Sisters." However his paper shows up quite well and we wish him success. It Should Be in Every House. J. B. Cardwell is back from Portland where he has been on professional business- for several weeks. John Potter, the Sams Valley pedagogue, was in the city Wednes day on his way to Ashland to attend the institute. Welch was in the city yes terday and informed a Mail report er that the arrangements had all been perfected and tho flouring mill at Central Point is a go. Miss Delia J. Pickel and the Misses Theiss started - veslerdav morning on their trip to San Fran cisco and Portland, going via the bav city. We hope they will have a pleasant journey and a safe re turn. W. B. Roberta "expects to leave for California the last of this week in company witn Mrs. Rob erts, whose health has been very poor of late, with to hope that the trip and change of climate will benefit her. They will visit Bart lett springs and the different health resorts of that state and will prob ably be gone all summer. In consequence of the engine of the R. U. V. R. R. getting out of repair the traiti was stopped for a couple of days this . week. Ralph Kideuhour, engineer, assisted by Horace Nicholson, of Adkins Webb's, fixed it up as good as new and Thursday morning it came down on time. During the layoff Geo.- Coulter treated the car aud engine- to a new coat of varnish which makes them shine like a new silver dollar. That Medford enjoys the distinc tion of numbering among its citi zens several connoisseurs of rare liowers is undeniable as anyone knows who has strolled about the city and gazed upon the numerous yards of beautiful blooming flowers. Among the rest we may mention the yard of Mrs, J. A. Edwards in the north part of town. The in numerable rare flowers and shrubs in this (yard are indeed a source of pleasure and a joy forever to the owner.
