Strauss Muster visitors at the opening day of the Match session o f the county court in The Dalles were Chas. T Bennett. C. A. McCargsr, C. J. I itllepage. Al. Behrens and K tt M i«. Mias Anne Shogren and her nephew. Foster Mi Lynn, who have been al the M a id A. Shogren ranch for some time, returfed Saturday to Portland. Mr. MrLynn came up last week with Miss May Shi«ren. A special meeting o f the common council was called Tuesday night for the purpose o f discussing the removal o f trees and rocks from the city streets. In the report o f the street committee the cost o f clearing Center street was estimated at $2 per stump, $18 total value. Same on Fourth avenue, near G. R. Wood’s house; $10 near barn of Chas. Davenport on Idaho street; $25 worth o f grading by Wilson house; $2.50, grading trail in front o f Chown’s and repairing pitch in road in front of house o f Amos Root, $5. Total, $74 50. The Mayor and the street committee thought that grading near Wilson’s would only make that toad steeper. Alderman Husbands ssid that Ore gon street at the intersection of Thiid avenue needed grading, as rigB were often cramped there in making the turn. Alderman Carlson stated that $15 ought to make a grade for Wilton now while the ground is in good condition; no grubs, and few loose rock. Mayor Race stated that the dirt from there could be taken to Idaho street where it io needed. "W e ought to hold expenses down as much as possible," said Chown. "There is no need to clear all these mentioned as it would be too exp en sive." Alderman M errill stated there will be considerable tourist travel through Mosier this summer, and we ought to save all we can for the auto travel. "M an y places can be passed over for the present," stated G. R. Wood; "1 have always had a fight to keep those little oak trees in front o f my house. There are very few wagons to pass and they help the appearance o f the to w n ." To this Alderman Hudson replied that the electric street light esnont shine through the trees, to which Aderman Wood retorted that Mr. Hudson was the only one to kick. Alderman Husbands then cautioned the councl concerning the danger from accidents where the trees are le ft in the streets. Mayor Race stated that the street below tha Tum-A-Lum Lumber com pany's yards should have the stumps removed, and the bank9 fixed up. The main thoroughfares need very little work dona on them and five or six loads ought to put them in the best of shaue. Councilman Husbands moved that the committee in charge order the stumpa cleared 30 feet wide in Center street; fix up Oregon street; spending $25 where it crosses Third avenue; • pending $10 at the foot o f Idaho street and $15 at the head of Main street, and $15 in the Leiter addition; that is, sums not to exceed the above amounts or a total o f $65. Aldermen Carlson, Hudson and Hus- l ai ds voted in favor o f the measure ; Alderman M errill and Chown against it, Alderman Wood, not voting. The motion carried. considerably, gave his observation* regarding the retail conditions. This will be the last regular meeting ol the society, the organisation having | adjourned the meeting, to meet at the j call of the president. With spring work commencing it was deemed inad 1 vtsable to try to hold a meeting each 1 Saturday. 1 • v • S * - O f " V W Hits the Spot EVERY TIME ' The Sunday song service at the Union Immanuel church for next Sun day, March 5. will be led by Dr. David Robinson.
