In June, 1636, two Dutch warships chased ’’a pickroon belonging to the king of Spain" into the harbor, and though In ueutral water, England being at peace with both combatants, lowered their boats to board the Spanish vessel. The governor of the town, Sir Hugh Cholmley, protested, but the Dutch carried out their design and captured the enemy's ship. Thus set at defi ance. Sir Hugh called up the trained bands, took boats, recaptured the Spanish ship and took prisoner one of the Dutch captains. C. — W ireless tele phone communication across the conti nent was accomplished fo r the first tim e Thursday, when experiments ex tending over several months culmi nated in successful transmissions of the human voice by radio from the great naval plant at Arlington, Va., to the station at Mare Island, Cal., 2500 miles away. The experiments were conducted un der direction of Captain Bullard, chief o f the navy’s radio service, in co-oper ation with the American Telephone & Telegraph company and the Western Electric company. Secretary Daniels, in announcing the report, predicted that further de velopment o f wireless telephony would make great changes in long distance communication both for m ilitary and navy service and commercial usage. Successful operation o f a device for automatically transferring to the radio telephone conversations originating on metallic circuits also was accomplished in the tests. President V ail and other officials o f the American Telephone & Telegraph company at N ew York talked easily with the Mare Island station over an ordinary m etallic line to Arlington and thence by radio across the continent. "T h e fact that the voices can be started on a land wire and automatical ly transmitted to a voice radio-trans m itte r," said Secretary Daniels, “ holds out hope that persons inland readily could be put in touch by tele phone with others at sea through some central transmitting station ." Portland— Follow ing is a summary o f the crop conditions in Oregon for the week, as reported to the local office of the weather bureau by special cor respondents throughout the s ta te : Although showers fell in the W est ern counties on the 23d, 24th and in some limited areas o f North Central Oregon on the 24th, which benefited pastures and gardens to some extent, there is still need for rain in all por tions o f the state. The warm weather has been favor able for the maturing of fru it and gar den truck. The picking and drying of prunes has been about completed and the harvesting of apples and pears has begun. In the Eastern Oregon valleys the peach crop was very heavy and the quality excellent, but owing to an over-supplied market many tons o f the choicest fru it is going to waste. Threshing has been practically com pleted, and the farmers are preparing the soil for seeding, but little wheat will be sown until the fall rains have commenced. W hile w aiting for the rain, ranchers are hauling their wood and winter sup plies. Irrigated crops o f alfalfa are very good, and the third crop is being put up in some sections. Tomatoes are plentiful and of excel lent quality. Seasonable fruits and vegetables are in the local markets in abundance, and the quality is very good. Cranberries Are Popular, Tacoma — Cranberries are proving unusually popular with the trade and the supply on the local produce market is good. As a substitute for black berries, dealers say, cranberries are what is wanted. The berries are roll ing in from Cape Cod and are o f fine size and color and hold up unusually well in shipment. They sre quoted wholesale at $9.606(10 per barrel. This week saw the first appearance this season o f grapefruit from the Isle of Pines. The first receipts sre a trifle green and are bringing 16 cents each. Egg Prices Go Up. Tacoma — Some dealers sent prices on fresh ranch eggs soaring and whole sale quotation--, now are from 35 to 38 cent* a dozen. Cold storage eggs re main steady at 27(>(28 rents a dozen. The rise in the fresh product is at tributed to a scarcity and an advance of the ruling market o f Puget Sound. Butter and cheese are unchanged. Fa vorable weather conditions have pro longed the tomato season and the beet ones to be had ere offered at 466(50e a box. Cantaloupes, grapes and apples are among th* leading sellers.
