34 years old, w as arrested here Mon
day as a fu g itiv e from ju stice on an
indictm ent found in Los Angeles in
October, 1912, charging him w ith hav
ing been im plicated in dynam iting the
Los A ngeles Tim es building.
The
a rre st was made on U pper Broadway,
w here detectives had traced him a fte r
a search of four years.
D etective W illiam J . Burns, who
accom panied th e officer m aking the
arre st, said the indictm ent charged
th a t Schm idt w as one of the tw o men
who w ent w ith J . B. M cNamara to the
works of th e G iant Pow der company
in C alifornia and purchased j 1000
pounds of dynam ite.
Schm idt was held in M ag istrate's
court, on short affidavit, w ith bail un
til February 24 to aw ait extradition.
W hen arranged before M agistrate
McQuade th e prisoner said he w as a
m echanic, 34 years old, but refused to
answ er th e o th er custom ary questions.

m a g istra te said th e man had confessed
to him in his cham bers th a t he was
