been declared a t Copperfield by Colo­
nel B. K. Lawson. He was supported
by five m em bers o f th e C oast artillery .
Miss F ern Hobbs, p riv a te secretary to
G overnor W est, dem anded th a t the
saloonmen in th e council resign, and
they refused. She then le ft town and
m artia l law w as declared, all the sa ­
loons w ere seized, and th e city officials
placed under a rre st.
The saloonmen w ere given 24 hours
to ship th e ir b a r fixtures and liquors
out o f th e county, on penalty of th eir
confiscation.
The city officials under a rre s t are
not even p erm itted to com m unicate
w ith th e ir atto rn ey s.
