We ■ refer to the spirit which brings ¡the joy of giving to our loved •ones and friends; friends whom we feel assured w ill return the gifts, often with interest. All tthis is very pleasant, drawing families closer together and ce menting friendships. But the ‘ true spirit of Christmas time is th e spirit which prompts giving to the deserving poorarid needy. "'Those who by stress of circum stances are in dire need o f the 'bare necessities o f life; those who cannot give an extra crust •of bread to their hungry little . ones, to say nothing o f a cheap •¡toy or a rag doll. Andi the pity / o f it 'is that there are 1 tens 6f ^thousands in the land so circum stanced', many o f thenvtoo proud ¡to beg or to make'known their i dire need. A number o f cases o f poverty pand want w ere discovered in IPorthrbd and made public thru •the Portland papers. The list of ¡•cash donations to a relief fund »■was published, andrit was evi dent that many o f the smaller rsubscriptions -came from poor people who know how to syrupa- rthize with the still poorer, and who gave their mite. As a re sult, many cases of actual suffer i n g and want were relieved at ‘this Christmas time; many a too frequently empty stomach got a • square meal, and-the givers as well as the receivers felt better if o f it. Yes. Christmas is gone, but not the needs of the needy, and ! the poor are ever with us. Not particularly here, hut every where. The practice of giving presents on N ew Years day and •wishing a happy and prosperous •year, has long been a custom. So also has the habit o f giving -to those less fortunate-cheering ctheir desolate lives, not only •with words, hut ¡deeds. The Christmas opportunity is'behind >us; but the New Year opportu n it y is still ahead of us to take -advantage of, if we care to.
