New York— Election returns show a complete triumph for the Democrats in [Massachusetts, where a governor and state ticket were chosen in a four- cornered fight, the selection o f a Dem ocratic' governor and state ticket in V irginia without contest, the ascend ancy o f fusion over Tammany in New York City, with indications o f Repub lican victory for the New York assem bly and the judicial ticket, and the election o f James F. Fielder, Demo crat, as governor o f New Jersey. A feature o f the New Jersey elec tion is that the vote cast for Everett Colby, the Progressive candidate, will not exceed 40,000, as compared with 145,410 received a year ago by Colonel Roosevelt for President. Fielder’s in dicated plurality is about 15,000. Fielder’s vote in the returns at hand is running ¿lightly below that received by Woodrow Wilson a year ago, which was 178,289. Stokes' vote probably will exceed 150,000, as com pared with 88,838 received by T a ft last year. Fielder’s plurality in the state is probably 20,000 and may ex ceed that amount. Estimates from Hudson county, Fielder’s home county, show that Fielder has carried it by 20,000. Stokes apparently has carried Essex county, the home of Colby and also the home o f ex-Senator Smith and ex- Democratic State Chairman Nugent, whom Fielder, on the stump, accused o f working against him. PRESIDENT VISITS NORMAL State School at Monmouth Praised By Former Leader. On October 17, 1913, President P. L. Campbell, o f the University o f Oregon, visited the Oregon Normal school. Some years ago, Mr. Camp bell was president o f the Normal school, so that he takes a deep interest in its present growth. In assembly, just previous to his ad dress, while being introduced by Pres ident Ackerman, the faculty and stu dents rose in a body and gave him the "Chautauqua Salute.” Following this he gave a very capable talk on “ The Oregon System.” He commend ed the "Oregon System” as the great est growth in the political, social and educational world. He urged insist ently that we get a bigger “ perspec tive.” A t the close o f his address the students gang to him in an enthusiaa- tic way, which pleased him greatly. On the evening o f the same day the faculty gave their annual reception to the students and townspeople. Presi dent Campbell, who was a guest o f honor, in speaking commended the early founders o f the school who had done so much to make the school what it is. He said that the value o f the school was determined by its work, by its spirit, rather than by its number o f students. The keynote which ran through his informal talk was the spirit o f cheerfulness and helpfulness. The people o f Monmouth felt highly honored in having had President Campbell with them at this time.
