The most appalling marine dis aster ever known occurred last Sunday night when the mam moth White Star liner Titanic collided with an iceberg off the Newfoundland Banks. Tbe Titanic, the largest and finest steamship on the seas, was supposed to have been invulner able to disaster of any kind. Now she lies two miles under ■water, many of the wealthiest and most notable magnates in the financial world going down with her. It is stated that the combined wealth of the passengers would Aggregat §1,0 • -;. The boat itself cost millions of dol lars. The survivors of the ill fated vessel suffered much hardships form exposuer. CONSOLIDATED NORTHWEST FRUIT SELL ING AGENCY. Consolidation of the two move ments to establish a general Northwest fruit selling agency at Portland has been effected. The Northwest Fruit Exchange has changed its by-laws to pro vide for ultimate nrutiali- zation undercontrol of the growers' unions which ship through thee xehange. A com mittee representing the Port land Commercial Club, Chamber of Commerce and Clear ing House Association has inves tigated the subject and recom mends co-operaliun with the ex change on the part of the press, commercial organizations, banks and the fruit growers. The Portland hankers are arranging to finance advauces to growers, based on the market value of the crop as fixed by the exchange. Until two years ago the de mand for Oregon and Washing ton apples was so heavy that buyers eagerly purchased crops on the tree'. T ie in crease in acreage is so enormous, how ever, that without a strong co operative selling agency the en tire prosperity of the fruit in dustry would be in danger. Last year, hundreds of carloads of apples, shipped by individuals and local associations, were sacrificed at auction in Eastern markets for little more than freight charges. The prices secured for those districts marketing through the Northwestern* Fruit Exchange were high and the growers re ceived large and prompt returns. Co-operation with the exchange, as reorganized, has been assured by the different commercial bodies and a vigorous campaign will he conducted to secure a heavy tonnage. The fruit dis tricts represented at the Port land meeting were Rogue River, Mosier, Walla Walia, Yakima, Wenatchee, Cashmere, Spokane, Lewiston and Boise. A branch office of the exchange will he established at Spokane, hut the operating headquarters will l>e built up at Fortland. Uniting these two movements means the salvation of the fruit industry by building up one strong selling agency. HOOD niVER'S APPLE BLOSSOM FESTIVAL 3I3GEST EVENT !N ITS HISTORY. RESETTING TREES. Uniformly poor results have followed li e rep!f.cing of trees that died immediately by ether trees of Lite same kind. But if the hole is opened up in the fall and allowed to Jie until in the spring it is safe to then plant out a tree of same kind as that which died. The hole should be opened ©ul a good deal wider and deeper than necessary to receive the new tree. The purpose should be to get out a large .part of the dirt around the root system of the first tree that occupied the ¡and.—Ex. Local F. S. Stanley, E. O.
