THE S U N S H IN E . Most true conservationists will agres with the secretary o f the Inter ior in his condemnation o f those loud talkers who spend their energies in discussing the wickedness o f waste, without at the same time being w il ling to assist in any practicable plan to stop the evils they so greatly de plore. We suspect, however, that few, even o f those good citizens who believe in the wisest use o f natural resources and who are sincerely eager to safeguard the public good both now and hereafter, realize how easy it is to neglect opportunities for conserva tion which lie a* out door. The coal and forests in Alaska are o f vast im portance, but the discharge o f our duty with regard to them will not oc- j cupy much o f our time. A nearer need is to see that we make the best use o f natural resources in our own back yards. How about making "tw o blades of grass grow where one grew before?” Why isn’t that just as im portant as keeping the coal or saving the streams or doing any o f the thou sand and one things that we individ ually can only talk about? Our truest conservationists are those gardeners and farmers who catch the sunshine and husband the rain and strive intel ligently to keep pace in production with the increase of the non-agricul- tural population. The need o f conservation o f food- supplying resources is obvious. There are more people in America every year, and every year the soil, if un replenished, is impoverished. The area o f rich land decreases and the cost o f living rises. Conservation of the potential power o f sun and soil is the only reasonable solution o f the problem o f nation-feeding and just here is our op;x/rtunity. What is for the nation’s good is also for our indi vidual profit. The wise use o f the soil means money in our pockets. The very greatest product o f land is derived from “ intensive garden in g.” Through generations o f intelli gent selection and breeding thorough bred seeds have been developed whose yield far surpasses in quality and quantity that o f the ordinary strains. You can be a true conservationist if you have a successful garden. Be sure, however, to start right by plant ing thoroughbred seeds. These can be bought of aeedsmen having suffi cient capital and experience to know what they are about and a reputation to maintain. candidates now le ft in the Republican presidential Walla Walla valley fruitgrowers will make a systematic effort to de termine what variety o f apple is best suited to that valley. SAYRE’S UNIVERSAL REMEDY 214 Bankers' Trust Bldg , Salem, Or.— Large Eastern brew ers, feeling the necessity o f securing a foothold in Pacific Coast hopyards, have pooled interests to gain control o f heavy acreage in Oregon and Cali fornia for their own benefit. This an nouncement was made in a statement given out here by Theodore Eder, general superintendent for E. Clemens Horst company, who is now in this' city. It is planned by the brewers to plant 1,300 acres o f hops this year. H alf a million dollars has been ap propriated for the purpose and from 200 to 250 acres will be set to hops in Oregon fields. Appraisals have been completed. “ Owing to the high price o f hops of the 1911 crop,’ ’ said Mr. Eder, “ about 25 large Eastern brewers, forming the nucleus o f the United States Brewers’ association, approached E. C. Horst, president o f the E. Clemens Horst company, with the idea of taking over a considerable number o f shares in their extensive hopgrowing interests on the Pacific Coast, with the special proviso that the money put up by the brewers be at once used to plant at least 1,300 acres o f new hops in the spring o f 1912. “ The American appraisal company, o f Milwaukee, was selected to value the old properties, which consist of over 2,500 acres o f hops located in practically every hopgrowing district in Oregon and California. “ A ll o f the 1500,000 subscribed by the brewers is being used to put in new yards this spring. The acreage to be planted is about as follows: “ Seven hundred acres at Del Paso, 200 acres at Wheatland, 150 acres at Tehama, 100 acres at Consumme, making a total of 1,150 acres in Cali fornia. In addition, some 200 to 250 acres o f virgin soil is to be planted in our Oregon yards, where the Krebs broth ers and H. D. Landon now have three large donkey engines and over 200 men at work clearing land for that purpose. “ The 1,150 acres to be planted in California will all be irrigated and w ill easily yield a ton an acre this coming year, because the ground has been fertilized and two-thirds o f it is being planted with nursery roots. The 200 or more acres at Independence should yield fairly well, being all on virgin soil, leveled for irrigation. “ Hop planting is already under way in California, over 350 acres having been set out and the entire 1,350 acres will be planted before March 1, so that maximum results will be realized in 1912. The E. Clemens Horst com pany w ill harvest over 3,000 bales of hops in Oregon and California in 1912.
