San F rancisco — C o u n terfeit $20 gold pieces, so clever in execution as alm ost to defy detection, have been spread profusely over San Francisco and o th e r c itie s of the Pacific coast, according to inform ation given by the F ederal au th o rities. The spurious gold pieces ap p ear so much like th e genuine th a t they w ill deceive even th e m ost serotinous, un less exam ined very closely. The d a te on the o u tp u t is 1888, and it w ill be found on close observation th a t th e m etal is a trifle lig h t. The rin g is alm ost as good as in the le g iti m ate coins, though to the experienced e a r it w ill seem a little “ b ra s sy .” A round th e design and inscriptions a slig h tly b lurred appearance is evi d ent, convincing the a u th o ritie s th a t th e coin has been cast. A considera ble am ount o f copper is used in m ak ing the bogus coin, and much gold has been em ployed in com pleting it. I t is believed th a t th e g ang has c ir culated th e o u tp u t in several W estern s ta te s and w ill soon be run to cover by C hief O perative Moffit and his o p er ativ es, who a re noted fo r th e ir success in th is line.
