Haul Placed Several Large Ordera In the United States. In a quiet way the Imperial govern ment of Japan has been placing some big orders in the markets of the United States which will help to keep our ln duKtrles busy. I'aynient for the sup plies ordered will distribute In this country some of the capital which Unit ed States Investors parted with when they bought the Japanese bonds. From a reliable source It Is ascer tained that the orders now placed In this country by Japan for railroad sup plies and In the course of execution ag gregate In value the largo sum of $7, 000,000. An order was recently placed with the United States Steel Corpora tion for 51,000 tons of rails to be deliv ered In lots of fi,000 tons a month at the standard price of $28 a ton. These rails, with the fastenings, will cost the Imperial government about $30 a ton, when they are delivered at Dalny. They are to be used In the construction of railroads In Manchuria by Japan. Orders for 310 bridges have also re cently been placed with the United states Steel Corporation by the Impe rial government of Japan, while from the same source orders for 000 cars and 115 locomotives have also been placed In American shops. All the equipment Is up to date In specifications. During the war Japan was so anx ious to obtain locomotives and can that cast-off equipment was accepted, But now the best that can be made Is none too good to satisfy the exacting demand for the government work. A corps of agents Is stationed at the va rious shops for the purpose of Inspect lng materials and workmanship and to see that the specifications are lived up to In the minutest detail. v w HEN writing to advertisers pleas mention cms paper. Granular Eyelid. Trachoma, or granular eyelids, Is the disease which the authorities are striving so hard to keep from becom ing established in this country. It al ready prevails here to a considerable extent, but It could 'be overcome if fresh cases could be excluded ;' and It Is because many would-be immigrants suffer from it that they are turned back from these shores every year. It Is a disease which afflicts chiefly the poorest classes in Europe, especial ly in Russia and Poland, and Its spread through contagion Is Increased by the dirty and unhygienic surroundings in which these people live. The disease Is extremely contagious, and If introduced into a public school Is likely to attack a very large number of the pupils unless it Is early recog nized and the sufferers are excluded. The inflammation, which soon be comes chronic in its course, Involves at first the mucous membrane which lines the lids, but Is almost certain, If neg lected, to spread to the covering of the eyeball. If the lid is examined it will be seen to be studded on Its under sur face with a number of little round bod ies of a grayish-white color, embedded In the thickened mucous membrane. The upper lids droop, bo that the eyes are only half open. After n time the eye itself becomes affected and the cornea grows opaque. This leads to more or less complete blindness. The treatment of granular lids must be energetic, and begun early, if relief is to.be hoped for, since the disease is a progressive one, which advances steadily to scarring and Impairment of vision unless checked in time. The treatment is one calling for the skill of the physician. Domestic rem edies are useless, even harmful, since the application of them causes danger ous delay and postpones the institution of scientific measures of relief. For the protection of others it is vi tally Important that the sufferer from granular lids should have his own toi let articles soap, towels and even wash basin which must on no account be used by others. The towels and handkerchiefs used by him should not go into the common wash, and should always be thoroughly boiled for ten or fifteen minutes and Ironed with as hot an Iron as can be used without scorch ing. It Is only by the exercise of per sistent precautions of this sort that the other members of the family can be protected. ;. HEALTH NOTES FOR JUNE. SPigsCAtARRH; HfiBnjfisSrigSS. (5 Dow Wow. I Edgar Saltus, the brilliant novelist, was asked by a young lady at a tea If , he thought that the use of quotations was a good thing. j "Quotations are only good," said Mr. Saltus, "when they are extremely apt. There was once a witty Irishman, Jumes E. Fitzgerald, who made excel lent use of a quotation in a political speech. During this speech he was re peatedly interrupted by a butcher, the proprietor of a large sausage-making plant. An adherent of Fitzgerald's finally took offense at the butcher's mocking remarks, and yelled: : " 'Hey, you, leave politics alone, and go back to your sausage machines!' "The butcher glared at the man and retorted : " 'If I had this speaker In one of my sausage machines, I'd soon make mince- i meat of him.' "Then Mr. Fitzgerald quoted from the platform with a smile: " 'Is thy servant a dog 1 that thou shouldst do this thing?' " A Queer Error. The late Ambrose L. Thomas, the noted advertising expert of Chicago, once told a story about two doctors In an address on advertising. "To Illustrate my point," he said, apropos of an advertising error, "I'll tell you about my friend Bones. Bones was taken down very bad, and, his fam ily physician being out of town, a spe cialist was called In. "But the family physician unexpect edly returned, and he and the special ist entered Bones' chamber together. They found the man in a high fever and partially unconscious. Each put . his hand under the bed clothes to feel Bones' pulse, and each accidentally got hold of the other's hand. ' 'He has typhoid,' said the first phy sician. " 'Nothing of the kind,' said the oth er. 'He's only drunk.' " Spring Catarrh is a well defined Spring disease. The usual sym ptoms are given above. A bottle of Pe-ru-na taken in time will prompt ly arrest the course of the disease known as Spring Catarrh. ., A Small Target, "He said be would blow his brains out if I refused him." , "Did you accept him?" "No, I knew, be wasn't a good enough shot to carry out his threat" Clew '.and Plain Dealer. Fortune tellers are fortune swelters for themselves. Thackeray's Pantomime. William Makepeace Thackeray was always too genial, too generous, too open handed, to be an accumulator of this world's goods, and in spite of the large earnings of his pen he died a poor man. Shortly before his death his friend, John Leech, the cartoonist, call ed 'upon him and found him In his study writing writing and sighing at the monotony of his work. "Why don't you have a holiday," said Leech, "and take your girls to the seaside?" The great novelist made no verbal answer, but, rising slowly, plunged his hands to the very bottom of his pock ets, brought these receptacles out, shook them vigorously without eliciting a rattle of coin, replaced them and then resumed his seat j Influence of Scotchwomen. It Is not surprising to find that those qualities Intellect, grit and strenuous endeavor that have brought the manhood of Scotland to the front should also be a marked characteristic of Scotchwomen. Englishwoman's Re view. ' i She Left Too Soon. Two young women were 'seated to gether in a Broadway car, when a well dressed man of middle age entered. One of the women bowed to him. "Who is that?" her companion asked. "He's the father of one of my chil dren," the first speaker replied. I Whereupon an elderly spinster of se vere countenance, who was seated next, I gasped and nearly fainted. "Isn't It queer," the young woman went on, "that I should have three pairs of twins all girls, too?" i The spinster changed her seat In a hurry too quickly to hear any further j facts concerning the young woman's I oubllc school class. New York Globe. BAB BLOOD TOE SOURCE OFiUX DISEASE Every part of the body la dependent on the blood for nourishment and strength. When this life stream is flowing through the system in a state of purity and richness we are assured of perfect and uninterrupted health; because pure blood Is nature's safe-guard against disease. When, however, the body i3 fed on weak, impure or polluted blood, the system is deprived of its strength, disease germs collect, and the trouble is manifested in various ways. Pustular eruptions, pimples, rashes and the different skin affections show that the blood is in a feverish and diseased condition as a result of too much acid or the presence of 6ome irritating humor. Sores and Ulcers are the result of morbid, unhealthy matter in the blood, and Rheumatism, Ca tarrh, Scrofula, Contagious Blood Poison, etc., are all deep-seated blood disorders that will continue to grow worse a3 long a9 the poison remains. These impurities and poisons find their way into the blood in various ways. Often a sluggish, inactive condition of the system, and torpid state of the avenues of bodily waste, leaves the refuse and waste matters to 6our and form uric and other acids, which are taken up by the blood and distributed throughout the circulation. Coming in contact with contagious diseases is another cause for the poisoning of the blood ; we also breathe the germs and microbes of Malaria into our lungs, and when these get into the blood in sufficient quantity it becomes a carrier of disease instead of health. Some are so unfortunate as to inherit bad blood, perhaps the dregs of some old constitutional disease of ancestors is handed down to them and they are constantly annoyed and troubled with it. Bad blood is the source of all dis ease, and until this vital fluid is cleansed and purified the body is sure to suffer in some way. For blood troubles of any character S. S.
