The hailstone continues to show a
steady, healthy growth. A few years
ago hailstones the size of pigeon eggs
aroused our interest; later we were
called on to admire some as large as
hens' eggs, and now we give the tribute
of pleased surprise to hailstones as
large as oranges. We confidently look
forward to the time when some en
thusiastic correspondent, writing of the
mammoth wonders of the county fair,
will throw conservatism to the winds
and tell us of the prize pumpkin nearly
as big as a hailstone. Portland Jour

CHAFF FROM THE STRAW STACK
Honesty lasts longest.
Obeservation is a good teacher.
Some are wise. Some are other
wise.
Who loses his temper is in the
wrong.
He who deceives you once is never

head than you thought for.
Bill Nye, the humorist, once had
a cow to sell, the story goes, and ad
vertised her as follows: "Owing to my
ill healthe, I will sell at my resi'dence,
in township 19, range 18, according to
the government's survey one plush rasp
berry cow, aged 8 years. She is of un
doubted courage and gives milk fre
quently. To a man who does not fear
death in any form she would be a great
boon. She is very much attached to
her fyesent home with a stay log chain
but she will be sold to any one who
will agree to treat her right. She is
one fourth short horn and three fourths
hyena. I will also throw in a double
barrel shot gun, which goes with her.
In May she usually goes away for a
week or two and returns with a tall red
calf with wabbly legs. Her name is
Rose. I would rather sell her to a
non-resident.
