JWost peoplo realize this fact, hut there arc occasional towns like Wallula where the residents are so short-sighted that they imagine the patronage extended to a local paper us that much money thrown away or given in charity ami such people aro not very strong on charity. We are glad to say that the people of Lexington and Morrow county are, for the most part, of a diU'eient slump, know the value of a local paper and net accordingly. WORTHY OF PRAISE. Just outside of San' Francisco lidrbor, recently, a fishing boat was capsized and four of the crew drowned in the break ers. The fifth was (lashed upon J'oint Jionita rock and managed to clumber up to the top and bold on against the heavy wind and dashing waves. In this position he was seen by the lookout on n tug, which on account of the rough weather was unable to render any as sistance, but she ran to Meiggs' wharf and the circumstance was telephoned to the life-saving station at the CI iff house and to the various newspapers. The "life-savers" were utterly unable to meet the emergency for which the sta tion is maintained, but a tug chartered by the Kxamhier und with two reporters aboard made all speed to the rescue The man was found still upon bis perch, alone witli the darkness and the roaring waters which sought to engulf him. After n struggle with the mad waves and a display of indomitable bravery by the reporters, the fisherman, half-crazed by exposure to the wind and icy waters, was rescued and taken to San Francisco. This was unknown to the other news papers, which appeared next morning with an account of the perilous position of the fisherman and tho prediction that ho must have been washed off and drowned in the breakers of the rising tide ; but tho Examiner not only got in a brilliant "scoop," publishing a full page account of the night's adventure, but saved a human life from the relent less breakers. Words aro feeble to ex press the commendation due the two repoiteis, II. II. Haxton and Allen Kelly, who volunteeied to risk their lives for another. Speaking of granges, alliances and farmers' clubs generally, the Vucifir Farmer of l'mlland says : These organizations would ho a mu tual help to farmers. In them they would learn what their neighbors un doing for the general good. They would understand the situation of the maikets ; they would know lietter when, how and where to market their produce; they would form mutual insurances; they would consolidate their trade with firms that would deal honestly with them at fair profits; they would make such ar rangements that all small articles could be sent to them at cost from the cities and towns where they trade. There would not be so much heller-skelter chalices about their crops, for they would have such information as would enable them the better to judge what sort of a crop to put in; they would all bo better posted as to tho best modes of preparing the ground, planting, culti vating and harvesting, ns well as to the best farm implements in use; and a thousand other things which would add to tlio wealth, health, happiness and comfort of the farmer. At Waukesha, Wisconsin, a female prisoner recently escaped from tho jail. Thereupon the sheriff mounted ids faith ful bicycle, and after a hot chase of half an hour the runaway was recaptured.
