GRANTED TO THE COMMUNITY
The CommuniCare program was created 24 years ago by the late Harold and Arlene Schnitzer. Now run by Jordan
Schnitzer, President of The Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation, CommuniCare is a year-long academic
grantmaking program that gives Oregon high school students an opportunity to learn more about issues that affect
their communities and to develop a commitment to social activism. Students are challenged to raise up to $1,500
which is matched 10:1 by The CARE Foundation to donate to local nonprofits that are chosen by the students.
Fundraising was optional this year, due to the challenges presented by COVID-19.

EAST OREGON SCHOOLS GRANT
$30,000
TO OREGON NONPROFITS
“The most rewarding
part of being involved
with CommuniCare
is giving back to the
nonprofit organizations
whose work we feel
very passionate about.
Every single one of the
nonprofit organizations is
worth giving money to,
but you have to narrow
them down to who fits
your mission statement.”
ADILIA,

School
“For me, the highlight
of CommuniCare was
the interview process.
Getting the opportunity
to have real conversations
with organizations
doing such amazing and
inspiring work, and really
diving into the impact
that people can have
on the world around
them, was a really
special experience.“

“I think people should
get involved with
CommuniCare because
it’s a great opportunity
to learn about the
grantmaking process
and how it all works,
get involved with your
community, and make a
difference. I am hoping
to major in political
science and be involved
with more nonprofits
after college.”
