SPORTS Wednesday, January 29, 2020 HerMIsTOnHeraLd.COM • A9 Pasco wins final match to slip past Hermiston lin midway through the sec- ond round to pull his team within 28-25 of Hermiston. Aiden Favorite put five points on the board for Hermiston at 106 with a technical fall for a 33-25 lead, but Pasco cut into the lead with a pin by Nate Tovar at 113 pounds to trim the deficit to 33-31. dawgs had a 33-25 lead with two matches remaining By ANNIE FOWLER sPOrTs edITOr In a back-and-forth match that came down to the final bout, Pasco had the edge in the lower weights that helped it to a 35-33 Mid-Co- lumbia Conference win over Hermiston. “It was a dog fight, you could say,” Pasco coach Jay Covington said. “Penciling it out, I knew it would be close. Their 145-pounder (Jordan Frank- lin) got after it, and we had guys at 120 and 220 that were wrestling their first varsity matches. Some of the guys are upset they didn’t do better, but we knew it would be tough.” Though the match was a big improvement from last year’s 57-12 thrashing by Pasco, Hermiston coach Kyle Larson said there still is a lot of work to be done. “We did all right, but not good enough,” Larson said. “When you give up 24 points in pins, you aren’t going to win many matches. We just have to be tougher, more disciplined and consis- tent. The reason Hermiston wrestling has the history and the culture it does is because we don’t accept getting beat by three points.” Hermiston led 33-31 heading into the final match of the night at 120 pounds, where Pasco’s Vic- tor Godinez earned a 10-0 major decision over Gavin Doherty to get his team the win. “It was exciting, but it was nerve-racking,” Herm- iston’s Sam Cadenas said. “We lose, we lose as a team. We are a family and we do what we need to to push them back up.” Hermiston rallied from a 19-10 deficit to take a 28-19 lead, getting an overtime Dawgs drop 3 duals in Idaho Staff photo by Ben Lonergan Hermiston’s Daniel Faaeteete pins Pasco’s Nathaniel Torres to win the 182-pound matchup during Thursday night’s match at Hermiston High School. Ray powers Hermiston past Southridge 52-29 dawgs hold suns scoreless in the second quarter to take a 26-7 lead at the half By ANNIE FOWLER sPOrTs edITOr At Hermiston High School, and in the Mid-Co- lumbia Conference, Chase Bradshaw and Dustyn Coughlin are two of the big- gest players you will find on the field. On Jan. 20, they joined some of the best players in the nation at the Blue- Grey All-American Bowl at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Both players saw sig- nificant time on the offen- sive line for the Grey team (West), which won 37-30 in overtime. “It felt unreal to be at the stadium of America’s team,” said the 6-foot-4, 275-pound Bradshaw. “Being in it, it is so much bigger that what it is. Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott play there. It was crazy.” The 6-5, 280-pound Coughlin echoed the sentiment. “I had never been in such a big stadium before,” he said. “It was such a beautiful place. I took as many photos as I could. It was an amazing experience.” Once the players arrived in the Dallas area, each team had a couple of practices at one of the area high schools. “They have high schools with indoor facilities,” Brad- shaw said. “It was intimidat- ing, but once you start prac- ticing, you realize they are all high school players play- ing high school football. Coming from Eastern Ore- gon and Hermiston, when you get an opportunity like this, you have to take it. It was worth it.” Bradshaw played right fall tied the score at 5-5. In the second round, Tor- res chose the down posi- tion, where Faaeteete got him turned and pinned him in 3:06. “I got on my back and I was freaking out,” Faaeteete said. “I got a boost of power out of nowhere and I turned him. I was surprised I got him — I thought I was going to get pinned. It happened so fast.” After Betz gave Herm- iston a 22-19 lead, Cadenas pinned Jacob Perez in 3:37 to extend the lead to 28-19. Cadenas led 6-2 when he pinned Perez. One of the points Cade- nas gave up was for an ille- gal throw. “That was not inten- tional,” he said. “He was trying to run for his life and we went down. I felt bad, that’s 220 pounds landing on him.” Cadenas, just a sec- ond-year wrestler, earned praise from Larson. “Sam is a good athlete and learns things fast,” Lar- son said. Disappointment came at 285, where Pasco’s Damian Silva pinned Dustyn Cough- Adrian Delgado went 3-0 for Hermiston on Satur- day in a three-team dual in Idaho. The Bulldogs dropped a 53-24 match to host Post Falls. They also suffered losses to Lake Stevens (49- 21) and Orting (49-21), which is the No. 2-ranked 2A team in Washington. Delgado, a junior, earned a 6-3 decision over Brax- ton Mason of Post Falls at 120 pounds. He also eked out a 7-6 victory over Tyler Fouts of Lake Stevens, and a 7-6 decision over Orting’s Kieron Lawes. Sophomore Sam Cadenas finished the day 2-1 for the Bulldogs. He posted a 10-4 decision over Orting’s Car- ter Thomas at 220 pounds, and then made the jump to 285, where he pinned Aus- tin Portner of Post Falls in 3:03. Cadenas’ lone loss was an 8-2 decision to Jacob Vincent of Lake Stevens. Vincent is ranked No. 2 in the 4A Washington rankings at 220 pounds. Cadenas is No. 3 in the 3A rankings. The West beat the East 37-30 in overtime. tackle, right guard and left tackle during the game. For the most part, he played next to Shane Stoyke from Loyola, California, who has signed to play at Wake Forest. “I thought we played really well,” Bradshaw said. “We didn’t give up any sacks or hurries. I was out there for three of our touch- downs. I never felt little, or that I shouldn’t be there. I felt I did a good job.” Coughlin started the game at left tackle, but also saw time at right tackle and right guard. “They try to get you in at different positions so college coaches can see you in dif- ferent situations,” Coughlin said. The West trailed 20-17 at the half, and the East quickly made it 30-20. But the West never gave in. “We had just over four minutes left and we needed a touchdown and a field goal,” Coughlin said. “I told them not to get down. We went out there and did it.” The West got the touch- down, and a 31-yard field goal by Evan Warren (com- mitted to Navy) in the wan- ing seconds of regulation to tie the score at 30-30. In overtime, Austin Bolt (committed to Boise State) caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Gunnar Gray for a 37-30 lead. The East was unable to score in overtime. Bolt, a 6-foot-4, 200- pound tight end out of Borah High School in Boise, was named Offensive MVP fol- lowing the game. Bolt was named the Idaho Gatorade Football Player of the Year. Bolt caught TD passes of 37, 12 and 25 yards, with the final one being the game winner in overtime. Coughlin and Bradshaw were the only players from Oregon, and two of four from the Pacific Northwest. The West coach was Mark McMillian, who played eight seasons in the NFL for five teams, includ- ing the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. Jayden Ray has strug- gled with her shot the past few games, but Friday night, she was on target. The Hermiston junior scored a game-high 12 points, and added five rebounds, to lead the Bull- dogs to a 52-29 Mid-Co- lumbia Conference win over Southridge. “Seeing Jayden attack and finish strong was awe- some,” Bulldogs coach Maloree Moss said. “I’m super proud of our defen- sive effort in the first half — that propelled our offense in the first quarter.” The Bulldogs (9-6, 6-5 MCC) came out on fire in the first quarter, with Ray scoring the first eight points of the game. The Suns got on the board with a bucket from Darline Connors, but a 3-pointer from Jazlyn Romero made it 11-2 with 3:51 left in the quarter. Katelyn Heideman scored back-to-back bas- kets for the Bulldogs for a 15-2 lead, and Ray scored inside with 45 seconds left for a 17-7 advantage. Romero had the last word, drilling an NBA- range 3 to give her team a 20-7 lead. “Getting back in the groove feels good,” Ray said. “It was a good home game for us. We had a big win Tuesday (over Pasco) and we knew we had to keep that momentum going.” Hermiston outscored Southridge (3-13, 0-12 Staff photo by Kathy Aney Hermiston’s Jayden Ray goes to the hoop during Friday’s game against the Southridge Suns. Southridge had a 7-6 advantage in the third quar- ter, but it did not make a dent in the deficit as the Bulldogs held a 32-14 lead. The Suns scored their first basket of the third quarter — a 3-pointer by McKenna Crum — with 3:44 remaining. It was their first points since the first quarter with 1:52 left on the clock. “We lost a little bit of focus, but we were able to pull out the win,” Moss said. “We got a lot of play- ers in; it was a team effort.” Alexis Kessell came off the bench to score four of her six points in the fourth quarter, Kendall Dowdy added four points, and Romero scored five of her 11 points before exiting the game with about four min- utes left to play. Romero added eight rebounds and six steals. All but one of Hermis- ton’s players scored. “Our bench is good,” Ray said. “They can carry the energy.” The Bulldogs got 15 points from their bench, plus a ton of rebounds — eight from Mia Hernandez, six from Kessell and five from Bailey Young. Connors led the Suns with eight points, while McKenna Crum had seven.
