According to the Ore- gon Department of Veter- ans’ Affairs, the day was set aside to place fl owers on the graves of Union and Con- federate soldiers at Arling- ton National Cemetery. Offi - cially declared as a federal holiday in 1971, Memo- rial Day is observed the last Monday of May. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4750 and Ameri- can Legion Post 37 are host- ing Memorial Day — Mon- day, May 27 — services at the Hermiston Cemetery and Desert Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Irrigon.
