COMMUNITY A12 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 2019 LETTER TO THE EDITOR Stanfield kids deserve great schools Photo contributed by Nancy Lauck Jackie Linton, Linda Monroe and Dawn Long of Altrusa International of Hermiston prepare and package soups to assist in feeding those in need through Desert Rose Ministries. Altrusa makes sure soup’s on Altrusa International of Hermiston is responding to the needs of the hungry. Members of the service club headed into the kitchen a couple of times since the beginning of the year to pre- pare soup. The group pack- aged more than 50 bags of frozen taco soup and chicken with rice soup in Janu- ary, which was presented to Jason Estle of Desert Rose Ministries, in Hermiston. And, in April, the gals were back in the kitchen again — making another 50 bags, including taco soup and navy beans with ham soup. A Community Service Committee project, the club received funding for the effort from a $250 grant from Thrivent Financial. In addition, the First United Methodist Church opened their doors to allow the use of their kitchen for the proj- ect. Estle, who expressed appreciation to the Altru- sans, said the food blesses many hungry people in the community. Altrusa clubs are active in service in an effort to cre- ate better communities. The name “Altrusa” is derived from combining altruism and USA. For more information about the local group, con- tact hermistonaltrusa@ gmail.com, visit www.dis- tricttwelve.altrusa.org or search Facebook. Echo Kiwanis get set to spruce up the town The Echo Kiwanis Club is hosting a Cleanup Day.The event is Saturday, May 18 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Club members will collect yard debris and other trash and gar- bage. However, regular trash and garbage must be separated from lawn debris in order to be picked up. To have debris removed, residents need to call city clerk Peggy Haines at 541-376- 8411. Those calling will be asked for their name and address, which will be passed on to the Kiwanis. To the editor: I have been working in educa- tion for 20 years. Many things have changed throughout the years, but there is one aspect to education that hasn’t. Great communities have great schools. I had the privilege to move into Stanfield last year. The community is close, cares about each other, and rallies behind its patrons and kids. I have been a part of a few communi- ties, but none that have represented that small, hometown feel like that of Stanfield. We have students that make their education a priority, strive to achieve, involve themselves in extra- curricular activities, and are suc- cessful in their educational pursuits. With students so eager to learn and achieve, I feel that they deserve a facility that enhances and encourages that learning far more than our cur- rent structure. Although our maintenance staff is incredible, they are working count- less hours behind the scenes to make old, inefficient mechanical systems functional. The Secondary School does not have adequate heating and cooling systems. The gymnasium and lockers rooms have been so hot that we had to shut them down for fall practices. The classrooms have no windows to let natural light in. Our middle school consists of por- tables that are very old, worn out, and expensive to operate due to their inefficiencies. Quality facilities allow our com- munity and our kids to have some- thing to be proud of. It is time to make our Secondary School facility one of the best around. The only way to do this is to pass this bond to fund it. With the state granting us the $4 million in matching funds, we have a wonderful opportunity to move our schools forward. Our kids and our community deserve it. Too often communities settle for “just good enough”. I don’t see Stan- field as this type of community. We are a great community. Time to have a great school. Please vote yes for our schools. Sincerely, Travis Reeser Vote yes on Stanfield school bond To the editor: I encourage all Stanfield residents to vote YES on Ballot 30-129 for our Stanfield Schools. This ballot will allow for needed structural improvements, replace- ment of temporary modulars and will build an actual middle school, improving the safety of our students and staff. I encourage all residents to stop by and look at display boards highlighting the improvements. The boards can be found at Main Street Market, Stanfield Public Library, City Hall and at both of our schools. Our current high school is almost 40 years old and has had minimal improvements throughout the years. Safety is a top concern for school districts; this bond would dramat- ically improve public entrances to both schools which would improve safety for our students. Parking is always an issue at our elementary school. This bond would reconfigure the current parking lot and allow for additional parking and safer walk- ways. The bond would add a mid- dle school building attaching it to the existing high school to allow for safe passage for all our students. In addition to all of the positive impacts of the bond, our school dis- trict was awarded a matching grant of $4 million dollars if this bond passes. If this bond does not pass, the matching grant will go to another school district in Oregon. This is a great opportunity to bring tax dol- lars back to our community. Please vote yes for our students and our community. Please vote yes on bal- lot 30-129.
