By BRETT KANE STAFF WRITER A ll it took was seven innings for Hermis- ton’s softball team to add two more Mid-Colum- bia Conference wins to their record. The Bulldogs enacted the WIAA’s 15-run rule twice on Friday, ending the first game against the visiting Pasco Bull- dogs 18-2 in four innings, and Game 2 with a 15-0 shutout in three. The wins follow the April 16 doubleheader losses at Kennewick. “It’s exciting,” coach Kate Greenough said of her team’s back-to-back blowouts. “After Tuesday, it was nice to score some runs and hold down our Staff photo by Kathy Aney defense.” Pasco opened the first Ashley Cameron (9), of Hermiston, reaches second as Pasco’s A. game with an early 1-0 lead, Carillo looks for the ball during the second of two Friday games. but Hermiston was quick to Noland said of Pasco’s pitch- respond, posting four runs at scored. The double solidified her perfect batting performance, where she hit 2 for 2 with three runs and three RBIs. The Dawgs sent 12 batters to the plate in the second inning of game two, resulting in eight runs, half of which came before Pasco put an out on the board. Noland, Sydney Stefani, Daisy Maddox, Grace Studer, and Brecella Nash all scored on wild pitches from Pasco’s Andrea Gonzalez, who surren- dered 15 runs on just three hits, walked seven, and didn’t bench a single Hermiston batter. “Pasco is a pretty inexperi- enced team,” Greenough said. “But no matter how a team looks on paper, you have to give every game your best effort.” Maddox’s two-RBI double in the bottom of the third drove in Cameron and Noland to call the game in three innings. “The girls were really aggressive today,” Greenough said. “They worked hard. They deserved this win.” Noland drove in two on a double for her game’s only at-bat. She, Stefani, Maddox, and Samantha Atilano each scored two runs. Cameron had three. Bulldogs can’t keep pace with Lions By ANNIE FOWLER STAFF WRITER One bad inning. That was the difference April 16 as Kennewick took the first game of a Mid-Co- lumbia Conference double- header from visiting Hermis- ton 6-4. “Either we are super great, or we have that one bad inning,” Hermiston short- stop Sydney Stefani said after the loss. “Usually we can get back in it, but today we didn’t. We have a couple of things to clean up. It will make a differ- ence, for sure.” The Lions made a clean sweep of the Bulldogs, tak- ing the second game 6-0. Both teams now are 5-3 in MCC play. The Bulldogs got off to a hot start in the first inning of the opener, loading the bases with one out. Daisy Mad- dox struck out, and a fielder’s choice by Janelle Almaguer forced out Bailee Noland at second base. Almaguer made quick work of the Lions in the first inning, but in the second, Kennewick did a fair amount of damage. MaKendrie Fuhriman drove in two runs with a sin- gle for a 2-0 lead, and Claire Jenne made it 3-0 with an RBI single to left field. A sacrifice fly by Abriel Johnson-Cuello gave the Lions a 4-0 lead. Jenne kept the Bulldogs’ bats quiet during the third and fourth innings, but they came to life in the fifth. Stefani singled to right field, and with two outs on the board Ashley Cameron drove in Stefani with a double to left field. Noland followed with an RBI single to cut Kennewick’s lead in half. Hermiston added two more runs in the top of the sixth to even the score, as Grace Studer and Cameron drove in runs, but the Bulldogs would leave the bases loaded. “We got kids on base, we just weren’t able to make adjustments in our at-bats,” Hermiston coach Kate Gree- nough said. “There is no quit, we just ran out of time.” The Lions, held scoreless since the second inning, took a 6-4 lead on a two-run double by Bailey Warren in the bot- tom of the sixth. The Bulldogs were unable to pull even in the top of the seventh as the Lions held on for the win. “We need to make the adjustments with timely hits, See SOFTBALL, Page A11 The Hermiston Bulldogs remain at the bottom of the Mid-Columbia Con- ference standings after Friday’s back- to-back home losses at the hands of the Kennewick Lions. The MCC’s No. 3 baseball team turned Hermiston away with 7-4 and 10-2 losses at Armand Larive. In the first game, Easton Stevens got the Lions on the scoreboard at the top of the second inning, and Cody LaFon- taine and Jackson Lind scored on errors during the following two plays. Trevor Wag- ner drove in Wyatt Noland and Ethin Randolph with a sin- gle in the bottom of the seventh, but it would not be enough to get back in the game. Seth Prewitt allowed sevens runs on eight hits and six walks over seven innings on Hermis- ton’s mound. Prewitt and Landon Jones each went 2-for-4 with a run scored. In Game 2, it would take both teams two innings to finally break out the bats. In the top of the third, Tim Gee dou- bled on a line drive to center field to drive in Kaleb Stevenson. The Bulldogs (1-13) responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning with Noland’s RBI-single. But the Lions were relentless, scoring four more runs in the top of the fourth and a game-ending, five- run sixth inning. Ste- venson, Gee, Stevens, and LaFontaine all drove in runs to bury the Bulldogs. It took three Herm- iston pitchers to con- tain Kennewick in game two. Jordan Ramirez opened the game, and let slip five runs, five hits, and three walks across 3 1/3 innings. Spen- cer Juul threw 1 2/3 innings of relief, but gave up five more runs. Randolph closed the game from the Bulldogs’ mound. Ramirez led the Bulldogs’ offense, batting 1-for-3 with a run scored. KAMIAKIN SWEEPS DAWGS — Hermiston dropped a pair of Mid-Colum- bia Conference games April 16 to Kamiakin as the Braves posted wins of 11-1 and 11-5 at LaPierre Field. The Bulldogs were in the thick of things in the first game, trail- ing 2-1 in the middle of the third inning. The Braves, who lead the MCC at 11-1, jumped out to an 8-1 lead with six runs in the bottom half of the third, bolstered by back-to-back doubles by Caleb Beasley and Niko Wiltz. Tanner Sullins fin- ished off the Bull- dogs with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning. Sergio Rosales, Wyatt Noland and Alexis Rosales all had hits for Hermiston, while Landon Jones drove in the lone run. Jordan Ramirez took the loss on the mound, allowing eight runs on six hits. He also walked six and struck out none. In the second game, the Bulldogs held a 3-2 lead in the middle of the third inning, but that’s where the Braves pulled ahead for good. Kamiakin took advantage of two bas- es-loaded walks in the third, along with an RBI single from Jordan Chase, for a 5-3 lead it would not relinquish. For the game, three Hermiston pitchers walked 10 and struck out six. Seth Prewitt hit a double and drove in a run for the Bulldogs, while Ramirez went 3-for-3 with a run scored. Gavin Ayers went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs for the Braves. Soccer HERMISTON 5, KENNEWICK 0 — Freshman Jorge Car- illo scored two goals, and Coleman Solano, Oliver Parades, and Moises Pablo each put in one to down their Kennewick hosts on Friday night. Hermiston got a singles win from Addie Caplinger, who won in a 12-10 tiebreaker. Adriann Stewart won in a 6-1, 6-2 singles contest against Pasco’s Beli Guzman, and Cyd- ney Lind finished the singles matches with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Vanessa Bradshaw. Grace Lind and Malayna Anderson got Hermiston’s only doubles win, defeat- ing their Pasco oppo- nents in two 6-3 sets. “Pasco is a good team with solid hit- ting,” Bulldogs coach Jason Sivey said. “They played tough, but we also didn’t really have a good day last Thursday.”
