A10 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 2018 Herald Sports BMCC eliminated in NWAC tourney First-team honors FOR NOLAND, BRADSHAW By BRETT KANE STAFF WRITER Blue Mountain was sent packing from the consola- tion round of the Northwest Athletic Conference tour- nament against the Lower Columbia Red Devils on Fri- day afternoon. The Timberwolves (25- 10, 11-5) fell into the los- er-out bracket after a five-set loss to Chemeketa on Thurs- day. They climbed back into the tournament after topping Skagit Valley in three, but couldn’t keep it going in Fri- day’s best-of-three match. Outside hitter Mariah Moulton kicked things off with a kill to put Blue Moun- tain ahead first, but Lower Columbia’s offense was stronger. The Red Devils commit- ted nine attack errors and two on serving in the first set, to help give the Timber- wolves a 13-5 lead. The Red Devils played catch-up to pull within 24-23, but Blue Mountain middle blocker Faith McQueen put the set away on the next play. It wasn’t long before Devils got it together. Lower Columbia took a 2-point lead early in set two, and although the Timberwolves managed to tie them up twice, they couldn’t keep up the pace. At one point in the set, McQueen caught a ball in the eye and missed the rest of the match. “At this point in the sea- son, it was a struggle to rebound after losing one of our strongest offensive play- ers,” Blue Mountain coach Jessica Humphreys said. The injury softened the Timberwolves up enough for the Red Devils to take the set 25-22. Ashlynn Cantwell, Megan Miller and Macey Wright opened set three strong to give the Red Dev- ils a 5-point lead. Timber- wolves outside hitters Syd- ney Neuman and Moulton held firm offensively to even the score at 13-13, but an attack error from Neuman and block from Miller sealed the match, 15-13. “The team played well,” Humphreys said. “Although the NWAC didn’t see our best game, I have to com- mend their effort. CAROLINE BREHMAN/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL First place finisher Thomas Puzey looks back moments after crossing the finish line during the 2018 Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon on the Strip in Las Vegas on Sunday. Puzey wins Las Vegas Marathon By BETSY HELFAND LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL PHOTO CONTRIBUTED BY LIZ SHARON The Hermiston girls swim team finished its season at the district meet on Dec. 2-3 in Kelso, Washington. The team included Janelle Almaguer, Gretchen Barton, Mattison Christensen, McKenna Christensen, Sheridan Deike, Aiya Hart, Grace Kopta, Savannah Marsengill, Emilee Meyers, Laly Morfin, Abigail Sharon (captain), Georgia Stevenson (captain) and Kora Tretteen. It was around mile three or so that Tommy Rivers Puzey found a familiar face on Sunday, Nov. 11 during the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon. He had caught up to Kellyn Taylor, who he some- times trains with when they’re home in Flagstaff, Ari- zona, and decided to hang by her side. Taylor, Puzey said, wanted to run 5-minute, 20-sec- ond miles, so the two locked in on that and ran together until the half-marathon and marathon courses split off. Taylor, 32, who was running the half-marathon, fin- ished first among women at 1 hour, 10 minutes, 16 sec- onds, and shortly after, Puzey, 34, finished first among all marathoners in 2:25:54. “Every once in a while, I do workouts with her in Flagstaff and so honestly it felt like we were just back in Flagstaff doing a practice run,” said Puzey, who is a 2003 Hermiston High School graduate. That pace felt good for Puzey, so once they split, he tried to hold it for as long as he could, which was about 22 miles.
