WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 2018 HERMISTONHERALD.COM • A7 RECORDS Field fire, trauma calls make busy night for UCFD Sunday night saw non- stop action for Umatilla County Fire District 1, including a fire behind the Highland Manor Apart- ments in Hermiston. The cause of the fire is unknown, but officials say the blaze was quickly con- tained and did not threaten any structures. UCFD crews were called to a grass fire in a field behind Highland Manor apartments on West High- land Avenue and Southwest 11th Street around 10:45 p.m., and had the flames out by around 11:15 p.m. Fire marshal Scott Goff said the fire burned a little more than a quarter of an acre, including trees, and the fire’s spread was limited because the property man- ager had mowed the field the week before. According to a news release from the fire district, when the fire call came in all personnel in the main fire station downtown were already out on significant EMS trauma calls, which resulted in a “small delay” in getting engines to the scene from the Diagonal Road station. “Unfortunately, the calls didn’t stop there,” the release stated. “While resources were still on the fire other medical requests began coming in and lasted all night. UCFD1 ran six more EMS calls during and after the fire.” Umatilla Rural Fire Dis- trict provided mutual aid to help cover calls.
