WEDNESDAY, MARCH 28, 2018 HERMISTONHERALD.COM • A11 SPORTS / FROM A9 choice and another base hit. It was Pasco’s best chance at notching a run but a 1-2-3 double play ended the inning and the chance at stopping a shutout. Hermiston cemented its victory with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth, high- lighted by a three-run RBI from Janelle Almaguer and an RBI triple from Ashley Cameron. After most of the Bull- dogs’ early runs came from wild pitches, Greenough was happy to see the team get some quality at bats. “It’s great,” she said of Hermiston’s late efforts. “Whenever you see pitch- ing that isn’t as solid, it’s kind of hard to have quality at bats sometimes but they went counts deep. They waited for their pitches and started to drive them instead of looking to score runs at that point and that was exciting just to see good hits and good at bats happen and (have) them work out in our favor.” Next up for the Bull- dogs is the Milwaukie High School Spring Break Tour- nament which began Mon- day, and then a week break before returning to play April 6. ——— SOFTBALL Continued from Page A9 STAFF PHOTO BY KATHY ANEY Hermiston’s MaKaylee Young passes the baton to teammate Jayden Ray during the girls 4x100-meter relay Thursday at the Buck Track Classic. Hermiston won the event. Weather ends Buck Track Classic early By ERIC SINGER STAFF WRITER PENDLETON — For the past few years, Mother Nature has been quite coop- erative on the day of the annual Buck Track Clas- sic at Pendleton High, grac- ing the 20-plus area schools in attendance with blue skies and sunshine for a great day of competition. This year, however, Mother Nature was not quite so nice. After roughly three hours of competing in chilly, windy weather, the Buck Track Classic had to be called off early due to inclement weather after a heavy, steady rain shower rolled through Pendleton and wrecked havoc at the track facility. The rains made the surfaces slick and hard to gain traction, but it also wat- ter-logged the timing system for the running events and rendered it useless. It was a disappointing end to the day for the Buckaroo coaches, who were not able to fully utilize the brand-new track surface, better-quality jumping pits, and lights on the field . “We have this brand-new facility, and it’s all a wash,” Pendleton head track coach John Brizendine said. The only running events that were completed were the 4x100 relays, 1500 meter run, 100 meter dash, 400 meter dash and the 100/110 meter hurdle races, and most of the field events were able to get through the bulk of the flights. The meet was roughly halfway through the flights of the 800 meter runs before the meet was called. Though the competition was not fully complete, the Hermiston Bulldogs ended atop both the boys and girls team leaderboards. The Bulldog boys scored 102 points, and led La Grande (84.9), Heppner (54.8), Pendleton (50.8) and Uma- tilla (32.2). The Bulldog girls netted 70.66 points and finished ahead of Ontario (61.2), Pendleton (57.86), La Grande (49), and Cove (37.99). Hermiston’s top per- formers on the day included Tyler Rohrman (second in 100M, 12.05 seconds; first in 110M hurdles, 15.03), Isaac Sanchez (second in 1500M, 4:26.16; third in 400M, 54.14), Jackson Morgan (first in high jump, 5-feet-6), Eric White (first in javelin, 128-02), Madi- son Wilson (first in 100M hurdles, 15.76), and Stepha- nie Miears (first in shot put, 37-06). The girls 4x100 relay team of MaKaylee Young, Elsa Torres, Madison Wilson and Jayden Ray took first with a time of 50.83, while the boys 4x100 team of Jon- athan Hinkle, Garrett Wal- chli, Rohrman and Sanchez finished second in 45.15. The Heppner Mustangs had a strong showing on Thursday, primarily in the middle-distance and dis- tance runs. On the boys side, Hunter Nichols took first in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:23.68 and in the 800 meters Trevor Antonucci (2:24.62), Evan Kollman (2:28.03) and Leo Waite (2:28.21) finished 2-3-4. And on the girls side, fresh- man Madelyn Nichols fin- ished first in the 800 meters (2:38.15) and fourth in the 400 meters (1:06.04). Also for the Mustangs, Derek Howard took first in boys shot put (43-06) and Alex Lindsay was first in boys triple jump (39-03.75) Among host Pendleton’s top finishers were Aaron Luke (third in 100M, 12.20 seconds), Shawn Yeager (second in high jump, 5-04), BEST STAFF PHOTO BY KATHY ANEY Hermiston’s Isaac Sanchez and Hunter Nichols, of Heppner, fight for the lead in the 1500-meter run Thursday at the Buck Track Classic. For Weston-McE- wen, Jacob Speed had a solid showing with a first place finish in the boys 400 meters (52.59), the only runner to run a sub-53 sec- ond time, and also finished fourth in the 100 meter dash (12.21). On the girls side, Ellie Scheibner finished sec- ond in the girls 400 meters (1:04.17) and Katie Vescio was fifth in the 1500 meters (5:31.50). However, the TigerScots couldn’t hold it as the Tigers came back and scored 10 runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to run away with the lead. In Game 2, Stanfield (3-3) scored seven runs in the first three innings and another in the fourth to put the Tigers a pair of runs away from ending the day early. Weston-McEwen (1-4) was finally able to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Michael Connell and Brody Woods led the Tigers’ offense with three hits apiece, with Con- nell contributing a dou- ble, two runs and two RBI and Woods with two tri- ples, two RBI and one run. Umatilla with comeback victory on the road JOHN DAY — The Umatilla Vikings trailed 4-2 as they came to bat in the top of the sixth inning but rallied for four runs and hung on to beat Lost River 6-4 at the Iron Triangle Tournament on Saturday. In the sixth, back-to- back singles from Uriel Garcia and Seth Cranston set up an RBI single from Kole Keller to cut the defi- cit to 4-3. A few pitches later, Cranston stole home to tie the game at 4-4. But the tie score didn’t last long, as a groundout by Josh Brown scored Keller to put the Vikings (4-1) in front 5-4 and an RBI sin- gle from Noah Holford brought in an insurance run with a 6-4 lead. She knows it’s on her right now and she threw great today.” But just as Janelle Alma- guer held Pasco scoreless, Hermiston couldn’t add to its lead in the bottom of the third, and if the Bulldogs wanted to end this matchup early they needed to come out with some power in the fourth. However, before Herm- iston reached the 10-run advantage needed to end the game after five innings, Pasco came close to getting on the board. Gonzalez was the lead- off hitter in the fourth and singled up the middle to give the Pasco Bulldogs their first base runner since the second inning and even- tually made her way around the bases after a fielder’s HughesNet is a registered trademark of Hughes Network Systems, LLC, an EchoStar company.
