WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2017 HERMISTONHERALD.COM • A5 RECORDS OBITUARIES POLICE LOG Kenneth Alford Roxanne Sewell Hermiston December 5, 1947 - October 22, 2017 Boardman December 30, 1981 - October 22, 2017 Ken Alford, 69, of Hermiston lost his struggle with COPD on Sunday, Oc- tober 22, 2017. Ken was born on December 5, 1947, in Goldendale, Wash., the son of Thomas and Velda Alford. He grew up and attended school in The Dalles. He Alford joined the Marine Corps in 1966 and proudly served for four years, includ- ing 13 months in Vietnam. Ken married the love of his life, Reta Cox, in Maupin, Ore., in 1979. He helped raise his two step- sons, Stacey and Joseph, whom he loved dearly and enjoyed teaching to fish and camp in the mountains. Ken worked many jobs, but he is best known for Alford’s Home Building & Remodeling, a construction business he owned and op- erated in Hermiston for 20 years. He totally remodeled their house one room at a time and made it their home. Ken enjoyed many hob- bies such as woodwork- ing, fabricating, mechanic work, golfing, four wheel- ing and fishing (especially steelhead and salmon fish- ing on the Deschutes near Tygh Valley), and hunting for elk was his passion. He was preceded in death by his par- ents and loving natu- ral grandparents. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Reta of Hermiston; stepsons Stacey Hammer of Pend- leton and Joseph Hammer of Echo; and two very spe- cial friends, Mark Born of Hermiston and Thomas Fisher, his Vietnam veter- an friend from Cincinnati, Ohio. He was born January 30, 1926, in Gales- burg, Illinois, to par- ents Ernest Thomas and Florence Rachel (Winder) Reeves. The family moved to Umatilla, Ore- gon, when he was Reeves 6 months old and there he grew up in a loving fam- ily with an older brother, Harold, and four younger sisters, Dottie, Norma, Rita Jean and Patsy. He attended Umatilla schools, graduat- ing in 1944. He loved sports and would say that is what kept him in school. Upon graduating, he re- ported for military service in the United States Navy, serving two years from May 1944, receiving an honor- able discharge with the rank of Seaman First Class May 19, 1946. During World War II, he was deployed to the Armed Guard Center (Pacif- ic). He served on the SS Jack Stinger and the SS Coquille and was discharged from the Navy in Bremerton, Washington. He was the re- cipient of the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was married to Joyce Arlene Barnett from 1947 to 1967. They had two children, Sandi and Mar- lin. In 1968 he married Maxine (Nielsen) Reeves; she passed away in 2007. Maxine had four daughters, Carleen, Carmen, Lynn and Leslie, who became part of Bennie’s family. Throughout his life Bennie enjoyed garden- ing, woodworking, fish- ing, dancing and watching sports. He appreciated Na- tive American culture and loved western movies. He never met a stranger and was known for his affectionate na- ture and his playful sense of humor. A hardworking man, he was employed at the Umatilla Army De- pot from where he retired after 30 years as a machinist. After enjoying retirement for a short time, he began working for Columbia Jr. High in Irrigon, until he decided to “really” retire. He was an active life VFW member, something he was always passionate about. He held offices, was in Color Guard, and partici- pated in many activities. He is survived by chil- dren Marlin, Sandi, Car- leen, Carmen, Lynn and Leslie, and sisters Norma and Rita Jean, in addition to numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by parents Ernest and Florence Reeves; broth- er Harold Reeves; sisters Dottie Stephens and Patsy Hutchinson; wife Maxine (Nielsen); grandson Steven Reeves; and great-grandson Austin Reeves.
