WEDNESDAY, JULY 19, 2017 HERMISTONHERALD.COM • A9 SPORTS Stanfield team takes 3-on-3 title Tournament draws 166 teams in 22 brackets HERMISTON HERALD Twenty-two bracket cham- pions were crowned after two days of heated 3-on-3 basket- ball at Hermiston’s Takin’ It To The Streets tournament held downtown over the weekend. The Stanfield-based Gro- gans & Co. came back to avenge its only loss of the tournament in the Men’s Open championship. Taking on an Oldies team that had beaten them 20-11 in the second round of bracketed play, Grogans & Co. forced a winner-take-all showdown by winning 20-14 to hand Oldies its first loss. After a short break the teams went at it again, with Grogans & Co. holding on for the 20-18 win. The team called KSA won the women’s bracket 17-15 over Bing Bong, and in the Co- Ed championship it was Rim Jobs taking a 20-12 victory over Wyant. The event, which is a fund- raiser for Hermiston basket- ball, attracted 166 teams this year. ▪ ▪ ▪ Smith homer drives in winning runs HERMISTON HERALD STAFF PHOTO BY KATHY ANEY Brandon Castro, of Granger, Washington, launches a shot during Saturday’s free throw competition at the Takin it to the Streets 3-on-3 basketball competition on Main Street in Hermiston. A late rally capped by an in- side-the-park home run by Paytan Smith in the sixth inning lifted Hermiston over La Grande, 7-6, in the night cap of their American Legion baseball doubleheader on July 11. La Grande had an inside job of its own in the opener, and won, 14-2, to split the day. Smith came up in the sixth with two outs and the bases loaded, but Landon Jones was able to cut La Grande’s lead to 6-5 when he scored on a wild pitch. Two pitches later with a 3-1 count, Smith hit a fly ball to left field and touched all the bags be- fore La Grande could get it in. Reliever Wyatt Noland then retired La Grande in order in the seventh to get the win. Noland pitched three innings of relief and allowed no runs on just one hit. Smith batted 2 for 3 with three RBI and two runs, and Lukas To- lan added two RBI as well. La Grande found plenty of gaps in Game 1, and hit five doubles and a triple to go with Logan At- kinson’s homer. The game was tied at 2-2 going into the third inning when Aaron Goss (2 for 3) doubled to drive in a run, then Atkinson followed with a line drive to right field that cleared the bases. Isaac Chamber- lain was 2 for 3 with three RBI for La Grande. Jon Gonzalez pitched the com- plete game for the win. He al- lowed four hits, struck out five and walked four.
