SPORTS A8 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22, 2017 PREP ROUNDUP Softball PILOT ROCK 3, ECHO 1 — A stingy Echo Cougars team battled Pilot Rock on Saturday after- noon, but fell short, 8-7. A two-out triple off the bat of Sara Weinke in the top of the sixth scored two and put the Rockets (1-0) on top for good. “We had runners on sec- ond and third and I was just hoping for a good single,” Pilot Rock coach Darin Fitzpatrick said. “But she (Weinke) crushed one to straightaway center over the center fielders head.” Weinke along with Bekah Roe and Rhyanne Oates each had two hits apiece in the game for Pi- lot Rock, and Jacey Wilson added one hit, two runs and two RBIs. Tehya Ostrom pitched all seven innings for the Rockets, and al- lowed three hits, seven runs and six walks to go with eight strikeouts. Echo’s (0-2) big, six-run inning in the third came with Mother Nature’s help, as Fitzpatrick said the skies opened up and a downpour of rain began, making it tough for Ostrom to control the ball well. Monique Montoya led the Cougars offense with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a run scored, and Samantha McQuown tallied Echo’s only other hit. Alyssa Ray got the start in the circle, and allowed eight runs, sev- en hits and four walks over seven innings with eight strikeouts. ———— R H PR 003 302 0 — 8 7 EHS 006 100 0 — 7 3 (PR) T. HEPPNER 26-29, UMATILLA 0-1 — At Umatilla, the Mustangs blew the doors off their season opener with 32 total hits in a non-league double- header on Monday. Heppner (2-0) was led by junior Maggie Flynn who went 5-for-5 on the day with three doubles and a triple. Umatilla coach Kylee Lete said it was a good day to get several pitchers their first work of the season, but she saw too many hanging heads as the Vikings (1-4) were too quick to concede defeat. “We did some good things defensively, but we’ve still got to learn what it takes to be competitive,” she said. Umatilla’s next game won’t be until March 27 when it hosts Portland Christian at 1 p.m. and Clatskanie at 4 p.m. Heppner will play its home openers on Thursday when it hosts Irrigon for two games starting at 2 p.m. IRRIGON 23-15, WAITSBURG 3-4 — At Waitsburg, Wash., the Knights opened their sea- son with runaway victories on Saturday in a non-league doubleheader. Mya Chapman and Kay- la Gilman earned wins in the circle, and head coach Jeff Botefuhr said there were plenty of highlights to go around. He was also pleased to see a few fresh- men getting their varsi- ty toes wet, and Emma Combes made some nice plays in center while Bailey Botefuhr was steady in re- lief of Chapman in Game 1. The Knights (2-0) will be back on the road on Thursday for a doublehead- er at Heppner starting at 2 p.m. TOUCHET 28-6, UMATILLA 13-16 — At Umatilla, the Vikings bounced back from the first half of their doublehead- er to force a split and earn their first win of the season on Thursday in non-league action. Hermiston coach Jason Sivey said he was happy with the team’s competi- tiveness after the Bulldogs looked flat in their season opener last week. “We came out with a lot more fire today and played a lot better,” he said. “Over- all it was a good match against a very good team.” He was particularly pleased with the effort of Reed Middleton and Bree- na Wadekamper playing at No. 1 doubles for the first time. Head coach Shann West said it was a great oppor- tunity for his players see the level of play he expects them to reach this season. Despite the sweep, West said he saw some positives come out of the match, and the aggressive play by his doubles teams was the highlight of the afternoon. Koby Grigg and Jason Morris put forth the Bull- dogs’ top effort on the day in a 6-4, 6-4 loss at No. 2 doubles. West said their on- court communication and awareness continues to im- prove with each match, and the narrow defeat should be a valuable building block in their progression. None of the other match- es were that close, but West said he expects things to pick up once the weather allows for more practice time on the courts.
