A10 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM TRACK: continued from Page A9 event wins for Hermiston boys were: senior Alexis Mercado in the 200 (24.34) and 400 (55.41), senior Elias Arenas in discus (135- 02) and javelin (140-08), junior Antonio Fernandez in the shot put (46-7.5), and Maciel in a tie for the high jump win at 5-10. Arenas also was second in shot put (45-09) and Fer- nandez was second in dis- cus (128-10). With a pair of wins in the relays, and a narrow victory in the 100, Hermiston soph- omore Scout Reagan was the most decorated Bulldog ROUNDUP: continued from Page A8 Grogan or Brody Woods because of the short changeover from the duo’s deep playoff run on the basketball team. Rogers said the basketball players have had just seven days of practice and throwing to this point. But senior Klay Jenson got the start for Stanfield in his first game back after missing all of 2016 with a knee injury and had some struggles walking four batters in one inning. As a team, Stanfield walked 13 Tri-Cities Prep batters in all. “I thought we might struggle today,” Rogers said. “Defensively and of- fensively we looked good, but walking 13 batters you just can’t win like that.” After Jenson allowed the two runs in the first in- to lead the girls team’s vic- tory. She held off the kick of Hermiston senior Audrey Lincoln to win the 100 in 12.67, and helped the 4x100 and 4x400 relays to big wins in their heats. Junior Maddy Juul won two events with 37-02 in shot put and 109-03 in javelin. She was second in discus with 105-10. It was a strong day overall for Hermiston throwers as ju- nior Stephanie Miears was first in discus (105-10) and second in shot put (35-05), and senior Makayla Akers was second in javelin (102- 01). The Bulldogs also swept the hurdles with sophomore Madison Wilson in the 100 (16.14) and sophomore Jennifer Fuentes in the 300 (53.74). Junior Melany Solorio also won two events, and after crushing the field by a full 20 seconds to win the 1,500 in 5:23.40, she held off Hood River’s Lottie Bromham down the stretch to win the 800 by a half sec- ond in 2:36.86. She said she was taken off guard at the beginning of the race as the pack seemed to look to her to set the pace. “I would have wanted it to be faster, because I don’t really know how to pace,” she said, and added that she knew it was going to be a close finish. “I could hear them breathing and every- thing and I was like, ‘Oh my.’ And then at the end I was like, ‘Is she going to pass me or not?’ And so I just went. I don’t really usually sprint because I’m not a good kicker, but that was like a pressure, every- one was yelling.” With their first meet out of the way and a base- line set for the season, the Bulldogs said they’ll just hope for more sun as they prepare for the next meet on Thursday, March 23, at Pendleton. ——— Contact Matt Entrup at mentrup@eastoregonian. com or (541) 966-0838. ning, Stanfield answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. Grogan got the scoring started with an RBI single into left field to bring home Thyler Monkus from third and then two batters later Ryan Bailey would score on an error by the second baseman to tie it at 2-2. The third run came on another TCP error, this time by the shortstop, which allowed Grogan to score for the 3-2 lead. But in the second in- ning, things fell apart for Stanfield as the walks be- gan to pile up and the Ti- gers could just never re- cover. Bailey was Stanfield’s top performer at the plate Thursday, going 3-for- 4 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Grogan went 1-for-3 with three runs scored and a RBI and Hunter Barnes added one hit and two RBI. ———— and sixth, then four in the seventh to make it a close outcome. “There’s no giving up in them, and that’s what I like about them,” said Umatilla coach John Garrett. “We just need to clean up our bad innings, and we’ve got more practice for that.” Seth Cranston had a big day despite the two losses. He hit a double and a grand slam to drive in six runs while going 3-for-4 in Game 1, and he added a double in Game 2. Touchet (WA) was more at home in Irrigon and used big innings in both games to get the sweep. Touchet scored 11 runs in the third inning of the opener to blow open a game that went into the inning with Umatilla down 6-4. Then in Game 2, Touchet plated 12 in the fourth to jump to a 16-6 lead. Tolan and Gossler led off with back-to-back walks, and then a dropped fly ball from Rid- geview’s left field allowed Tolan to score Hermiston’s first run and cut the deficit to 3-1. Then after another walk, this time to Brylee Dufloth to load the bases, Gossler’s heads-up baserunning al- lowed him to sprint home and score on a overthrow back to the pitcher from Ridgeview’s catcher and make it 3-2. Then Kaden Caldwell fol- lowed with a flare into right field to score Gritz and tie the game at 3-3. Julissa’s younger sister Janelle replaced her in the fifth inning and allowed just one hit in a scoreless frame.
