January 16, 1936-March 5, 2017 Hermiston December 28, 1919-March 11, 2017 William E. “Bill” Jones was born on Nov. 14, 1923, in Joes, Colorado, to parents Alexander Bryan Jones and Bertha Coral Ben- nett Jones. He died on Feb. 9, 2017, at home in Hermiston, Oregon, at the age of 93 years. Bill served in Jones the United States Army Air Force from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1945. He spent many years working as a prospector, mining throughout the area. Bill enjoyed cribbage, playing cards, travel- ing, spending time with his family. He was a life member of the Halfway VFW and the Columbia Grange. He is survived by his brothers Harry Jones and wife Doris, Longview, Washington, Frank- lin Jones, Woodland, Washington, and Galen Jones and wife Carla, Longview; sis- ters Eliza- beth Shaw of Herm- iston, Do- ris Reid of Hermiston, Edna Col- lyer and husband Clarence of Herm- iston, and Sara Wilson, Waitsburg, Washington; spe- cial niece Emily Mellick of Herm- iston, Ore.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Norman, and sis- ters Iris and Martha. A graveside service was held on Friday, March 10, 2017, at the Hermiston Cemetery. Carol LaRee Treadwell Hermiston May 10, 1961-March 5, 2017 Carol LaRee Treadwell of Hermiston, Oregon, was born on May 10, 1961, in Kenne- wick, Washington, to parents Gordon and LaRee Hen- dricks Treadwell. She passed away on March 5, 2017, in Richland, Washington, at the age of 55 years. Carol was raised and attended schools in Ken- newick, Washington, until midway through her junior year when her family moved to Hermiston. She graduated from Hermiston High School in the class of 1979. Carol then attended Ricks College and earned an associate’s de- gree in accounting, and later a bachelor’s degree in edu- cation at Washington State University. She worked with mental- ly and physically disabled adults in Portland, Oregon, for 10 years before returning to college. Carol earned her RN certificate of nursing at Columbia Basin Community College and loved caring for her patients, especially chil- dren. She lived in Prosser, Washington, and worked in Sunnyside for several years before returning to Hermis- ton, where she has lived since. Carol was very outgoing and loving. She would go out of her way to help anyone and when she made friends, they were friends for life. Carol en- joyed people, crafts, and serv- ing others. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She is survived by her par- ents Gordon and LaRee Tread- well, Hermiston; sister Janet Miller and her husband John, Springfield, Missouri; precious niece Megan Miller; three aunts, one uncle, and numerous cousins and very good friends. A funeral service was held on Friday, March 10, 2017, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 850 S.W. 11th St., Hermiston. Burial followed at the Hermiston Cemetery. Shayne Edward Burres Irrigon February 18, 1970-March 4, 2017 Shayne Edward Burres was born February 18, 1970, in Prineville, Oregon. He passed away at the family home in Irrigon on March 4, 2017, surrounded by his family. Shayne grew up in Eastern Oregon and graduated from Umatilla High Burres School. He worked as a marine deputy for Umatilla County for two years. Shayne became a mas- ter automotive diagnostician and spent most of his working years at the local Chevrolet dealership. Bow hunting was Shayne’s passion. He was a highly skilled hunter and enjoyed sharing his hunting seasons in the mountains out of Heppner with family and friends. He especially enjoyed sharing his skill and love of hunting, fish- ing and mushroom hunting with his nieces and nephews. Shayne also has two nieces, Patricia and Elizabeth Burres of Umatilla, and three neph- ews, Dwayne Richard Burres of Umatilla, Tyler Root of Fort Carson, Colorado, and Travis Root of Prineville. Shayne was a loving and devoted father, son, broth- er, uncle and friend. A cel- ebration of life will be held for family and friends in the mountains he loved when the weather has moderated and the snow is gone. Ruby Joyce Lucas was surrounded by family in Spokane, Washington, on March 5, 2017, as she left this world to be reunited with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Ruby was born in Salem, Oregon, on Jan. 16, 1936, to Dempsey Glover and Bessie (White) Glover. She spent the majority of her Lucas youth in Spokane and as an adult spent many years in both Spokane and Umatilla. Ruby was a de- voted wife to Charles Lu- cas (married in April 1968) and a mother of eight chil- dren: Vonda (Ed), Gary (Tammy), Sharon, William (Mary), Barbara, Richard, David (Cheryl) and Kelly. Ruby had a green thumb and could often be found tending to her garden. She also had an affinity for the sea and spent countless hours watching the ocean and all of the wildlife that resided within. Ruby will be re- membered by numer- ous grandchildren and great-grandchil- dren. She was pre- ceded in death by both parents; her soulmate, Chuck; one daughter, Barb; and grandson Michael. Richard Duane Smith Irrigon October 15, 1957-February 16, 2017 Richard Duane Smith, born October 15, 1957, went to fish with the angels on Febru- ary 16, 2017. He is sur- vived by his wife Leecia; daughters Kris- ta and Kayela, and Kayela’s husband Jackie; grandbabies En- Smith rique, Addi and Remi; brother Rob and his wife Jamie; and mother Bina and her husband Jay. Hartley, age 97 years and 73 days, passed away peacefully in Hermis- ton, Oregon, under the care of hospice. He was born on Dece 28, 1919, in Harbor, Oregon, the oldest child of Har- old Ralph and Sadie (Heiberger) Hartley. Ralph grew up on the Siletz River near Lincoln City, Or- Hartley egon, and was the valedictorian of his class at Siletz High School. Follow- ing graduation in 1937 he joined his family in Herm- iston, Oregon, where his fa- ther owned the Happy Thot Dairy. A big part of Ralph’s younger years was spent milking cows and process- ing milk for home delivery. In 1946 Ralph married Virginia Borthwick and they had six children: Dennis, Scott (Donna), Brad, Mar- cia Sherris, Janis (Terry) Williams and Harold (Pat). They divorced in 1978. Ralph was married to Pau- line Kombel from 1982 until her death in 2011. In 1950 Ralph became a member of the Laborer’s Union. He worked building highways and dams, such as Interstate 84 and McNary Dam, until his retirement in 1985. For many of his retire- ment years, until almost the age of 90, Ralph went to the forest and cut, hauled and delivered firewood. He supplied numerous customers in Herm- iston with their win- ter wood supply. Besides cutting fire- wood, Ralph enjoyed fishing, hiking in the Wallowa Mountains and, most of all in his later years, ac- tively managing his invest- ments. Ralph was preceded in death by his wife Pauline, his parents, brothers Russell and George, sister Marie Franek and great-grandson Trevor Page. In addition to his six children and spouses, Ralph is survived by 13 grandchil- dren, 22 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grand- children.
