A10 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2017 SPORTS Flynn defends district title Hermiston Herald The Heppner/Ione wres- tling team is sending two members to the state cham- pionships after Cord Flynn and Trevor Antonucci each qualified during Friday’s 2A/1A Special District 4 championships at Armand Larive Middle School. Flynn (33-1) brought back his second straight dis- trict title at 195 pounds by pinning Pine Eagle’s Joseph Aguilar in 2 minutes, 46 sec- onds in the championship bout. It was his second pin of the meet, and after receiv- ing a bye in the first round he beat Joseph/Wallowa’s Gavin Baldwin in 1:17. Antonucci (20-10) had to wrestle four times, but also went out with a win by pinning Grant Union/Prairie City’s Eli Sheedy in 54 seconds in the second-place match. Antonucci had suffered his first defeat of the after- noon in the district cham- pionship with a 10-2 loss to Joseph/Wallowa’s Ste- ven Beckman. He won his other two matches by pin over Union/Cove’s Lincoln Deem in 1:11 and Elgin’s Kenneth Terry in 1:30. Heppner finished fourth in team points with 97. Grant Union won the team title with 228, Crane was second with 177 and Enter- prise was third with 117.5. It will be the second state championships berth for Flynn, who reached the final match as a junior last season before finishing second to Culver’s Jaiden Jones. The wrestlers have met once this season with Flynn winning by pin (3:15) in the championship at the Jo-Hi Invite on Jan. 7. It is the first state tourna- ment qualification for Anto- nucci. Heppner 145-pound- er Carson Brosnan just missed out on a state berth with a third-place finish. He reached the first-place match before suffering defeats to district champion William Johnson of Crane and then Enrique Delgado of Adrian in the second-place match. Other district champi- ons were Shane Lund (113 pounds) and Cole Farwell (120) of Enterprise; Blake Butler (126) of Pine Eagle; Jayson Blackburn (132) of Union; Clay Johnson (138) and Drew Lusco (220) of Grant Union; William John- son (145), Elijah Epling (152) and Samuel Williams (285) of Crane; Tanner Owen (160) and Donnovan Tate (182) of Elgin; Rylie Warnock (170) of Joseph. The state championships will be held at Portland’s Veterans Memorial Colise- um starting at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 24. ——— 2A/1A Special District 4 championships Heppner placers 1st place — Cord Flynn (195) 2nd place — Trevor Antonucci (106) 3rd place — Carson Brosnan (145) 4th place — Jacob Wallace (160) 5th place — Leo Waite (132); Charles Cason (145); Zach Bredfield (152) 6th place — Ethan Holmgren (170) ANGEL CARPENTER/EO MEDIA GROUP This file photo shows Heppner/Ione’s Cord Flynn receiving the Mick Dougharity Outstanding Wrestler Award. Her time of 13.928 earned her $7,632 and a fourth-place standing. In the Friday, Feb. 17 performance, Crossley finished eighth with a time of 19.272, which was not fast enough to advance to the finals. BULLDOGS: continued from Page A9 Hermiston (15-6, 5-2 CRC) owed part of its suc- cess to a balanced score sheet, which has been something of a rarity this season. Four players fin- ished in double figures for Hermiston, led by Xavier Rambo with a game-high 16. Behind him, Chance Flores had 15, Jordan Ramirez had 13 and Hunter Walls had 12. “I thought people were pretty unselfish at times,” Arstein said of the balance, “and we’ve talked about getting more assists as a team so that was a pretty good night. We took some steps in the right direction and it’s nice to get a couple wins in a row here.” Hermiston led for the majority of the game, holding an 18-9 advantage after one quarter and a 34- 16 lead at the break. Hood River’s offense picked up a bit in the second half, scoring 36 total points but the Bulldogs boosted their scoring as well to keep a sizable cushion. The abundance of fouls called meant numerous trips to the free throw line for Hermiston where they managed a solid 20-27 (74 percent) mark to Hood Riv- er’s 8-18 (44 percent). continued from Page A9 UP NEXT Stanfield, seeded No. 2 in the state tournament, will host a first-round game at 6 p.m. Friday against 15th- seed Oakland (17-9). EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS. CHOOSE A PROVEN SOURCE FOR RETURN ON INVESTMENT You should be advertising in these tough economic times. “ We are a regional transportation company with drivers and vehicles stationed in six cities. We occasionally run classifi ed help wanted ads in various publications in the northwest when we have driver openings. Sometimes our classifi ed ad draws very few results (depending on the time of year) so we must repeat the ad. This recently occurred with a week long ad we ran in the East Oregonian. Our classifi ed ad representative, Dayle S. expressed concern about the lack of success in our ad and asked our permission to enhance the ad to garner a better response. She revamped the ad which we were very impressed with. The response to her revamped ad was dramatic and we are SO SO impressed with the unsolicited service Dayle provided. Transportation Solutions Out of all the publications we advertise in, this was the fi rst time an ad representative took the time to assist us with a more eff ective ad. Anytime we need a classifi ed ad in the East Oregonian, we will require that Dayle is the one who places our ad. Of the six cities we advertise in, Dayle with the East Oregonian is the very best classifi ed ad consultant we have ever worked with. ” Myron H., Transportation Solutions To advertise in the most powerful local media available, call Dayle or Terri at 1-800-962-2819 .
