A8 • HERMISTONHERALD.COM WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 2016 SPORTS Stanfield, Echo, Ione win big in final week Prep roundup: Final week of regular season in the books Hermiston Herald STANFIELD 54, PI- LOT ROCK 12 — At Stan- field, the Tigers finished off an unblemished Columbia Basin Conference schedule with a 54-12 defeat of the Pi- lot Rock Rockets on Friday night. The win also completes one of the best regular sea- sons in school history for the Tigers (8-1, 4-0 CBC), which saw the team aver- age more than 34 points per game on offense and allow an average of just 16.7 points on defense. “It’s been fun,” Stanfield coach Davie Salas said of Stanfield’s season. “I told the kids at the beginning of the year I wanted to ride this sea- son as long as we can and we got a good start.” Quarterback Dylan Gro- gan had a big game for Stanfield on Friday, com- pleting 9-17 passes for 200 yards and one touchdown, while also running the ball 12 times for 137 yards and a touchdown. Wideout Brody Woods hauled in six of Gro- gan’s passes for 147 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, Makiah Blankenship led the way with 116 yards on seven car- ries, while Adrian Renner carried it four times for 58 yards and one touchdown and Justin Keeney six times for 44 yards and one touch- down. Senior running back Thy- ler Monkus, who got banged up a bit last week against Heppner, was held out of the game for precautionary reasons. Salas said Monkus easily could have played if needed Friday, but the team wanted to rest him to be healthy for the postseason. Stanfield will host a first round playoff game Friday against Central Linn. ——— PRHS (0-8, 0-4) 14 SSS (8-1, 4-0) 54 Stanfield statistics PASSING — D. Grogan 9-17, 200 yds, TD; B. ECHO 52, JORDAN VALLEY 6 — At Echo, the Cougars clinched a spot in the 1A state playoffs with a blowout of Jordan Valley in a Special District 1 playoff game on Friday night. It’s the first time Echo (5- 3, 4-2 SD1) has been to the postseason since 2012. “It’s been a long time coming and a hard three years for our seniors,” said Echo coach Rick Thew, “and for the guys to get to this spot, I couldn’t be more proud.” Echo ran the ball 42 times for 397 yards and eight touchdowns as a team in the game, led by full- back Logan Butler with 167 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Quarterback Devan Craig also ran it 13 times for 105 yards and four touchdowns. The number 52 was also Echo’s magic number once again on Friday, as Echo scored 52 points for the third straight game — all victo- ries — and it also marks the fourth time in its five wins that the team scored 52. “I’ll take it,” Thew said. “If that’s what we need to do next week, too, then let’s go do it.” Echo will travel to Drain to face North Douglas in its first round playoff match-up that will be played on Friday. ——— JV 6 0 0 0 — 6 EHS 0 34 6 12 — 52 Statistics PASSING — D. IONE 54, SOUTH WASCO 0 — At South Wasco, the Ione Cardinals ended their 2016 campaign on a high note, shutting out the South Wasco Redsides on Friday night. “We’re all very excit- ed,” Ione coach Todd Knop said of the win. “I told the kids that football’s not al- ways fun with all the work in pratice and the weight room, but it is fun when that work let’s you get out on the field and play like we did to- night.” Ione (2-7, 2-4 SD4) played well enough that it gave Knop a chance to emp- ty his bench and play every player in the game, giving him a good look at the tal- ent that will be back next season. “They all played really well tonight,” Knop said. “The kids all stepped up when they were called on and impressed us.” Knop also pointed out ex- change student Daniel Kelly and Henry Padberg as stand- out players, with Kelly scor- ing a pair of touchdowns and Padberg turning in a great game on defense.
